ABSTRACT

Lower gastrointestinal bleeding means bleeding from sites distal to the ligament of Treitz. The management of haemorrhage involves two folds: first an evaluation of the hemodynamic status and resuscitation when necessary and as soon as possible aetiological investigation. Advances in endoscopic, radiological and surgical equipment and techniques offer an efficient multidisciplinary approach. Colonoscopy usually allows aetiology diagnostic and in some cases haemostasis. Imaging is useful in major haemorrhage, and sometimes enables endovascular treatment. Surgical treatment depends on aetiology, in some cases emergent surgery is the only possible way to obtain haemostasis
