Studies on heterophyid infections among some fishes in Egypt

A total number of 300 fishes [Oreochromis niloticus, Mugil cephalus and fingerling of Ctenopharyngodon idella "grass carp"] were collected from river Nile at Giza, Wadi Al-Rayan [Fayoum province] and Abbassa aquaculture [Sharkiya province] respectively. Encysted metacercariae of the heterophyid were collected from the muscles and gills of the examined fish, with prevalence 74.33%.Three groups each consisted of one pigeon [Columbia livia domestica] and one heron [Ardea ibis ibis], which were experimentally fed with heterophyid metacercariae collected from examined fishes. The fourth group [one pigeon and one heron] was kept as non-infected controls. Pygidiopsis genata, P. summa, Centrocestus armatus, Heterophyes equalis, H. dispar and H. heroni n.sp. were recovered from the intestinal mucosa, one week post infection. enzyme linked immunosorbent assay for serodiagnosis of taenia hydatigena metacestode infection in sheep

Serological examination of 500 sheep serum samples obtained from Cairo Abattoir during the period from January 1997 to September 1997 using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA] revealed that 151 samples were seropositive for Taenia hydatigena metacestodes with optical density mean value 1.09 +/- 0.09, 0.56 +/- 0.09 and 0.31 +/- 0.04 for heavy, moderate and light infected animals, respectively. Out of 100 positive animals at postmortem [PM], 91 were seropositive with ELISA test with a sensitivity rate of 91%. Sixty animals from 400 negative ones at PM showed positive reaction, while 340 animals showed negative reaction with ELISA test

Argon laser, beta irradiation and mitomycin C: three weapons against the recurrence of pterygium

In this study, Argon Laser, Beta Irradiation and Mitomycin C were used after surgical excision of pterygium. The efficacy of each method to prevent recurrence of pterygium were compared. This study included 90 eyes belonging to 67 patients [62 males, 5 females]. The cases were divided into 3 groups. The first group [Group A] Argon laser group [30 eyes belonging to 22 patients] were subjected to surgical removal followed by Argon laser application. The second [Group B] B irradiation group [30 eyes belonging to 19 patients] were subjected to surgical removal followed by beta irradiation [2000 rad]. The third group [Group C] Mitomycin C group [30 eyes belonging to 26 patients] were subjected to mitomycin C0.02%. The recurrence rate, doses, results and complications were thoroughly discussed

Some morphobiological studies on the early developmental stages of heterakis gallinarum [Schrank, 1788]

The morphology of 1st and 2nd stage larvae of Heterakis gallinarum removed from their egg shells was described. It has been experimentally proved that embryonated eggs containing first stage larvae did not hatch in the infested chicks. The hatched 2nd stage larvae were found at the distal third of the small intestine.
