ABSTRACT

Background: Obesity is one of the problems of major concern to today's society. Weight loss has been reported for Kelussia odoratissima Mozaff

Objective: Aim of this research is to examine the effect of this plant extract on plasma total antioxidant capacity and Bone Morphogenetic Protein 7 [BMP7] gene expressions in white adipose tissue [WAT]

Methods: Eighty male wistar rats were divided in two prevention [A] and treatment [B] groups and every group were divided to four subgroups. The A for prevention from obesity and B were used for reducing of obesity. WAT was obtained after the study for BMP7 gene expression [with using Real time PCR]. Liver sample for catalase activity, blood for measuring of total antioxidant capacity and paraoxonase 1 activity were prepared

Results: Weight loss and BMP7 gene expression was seen only in subgroup that receiving K. odoratissima hydroethanolic extract in the A group. Contrary to expectation, K. odoratissima extract was reduced the total antioxidant capacity in both groups, reduced level of serum paraoxonase 1 activity and increased liver catalase [p value = 0.002] in comparing to the subgroup that received high fat diet [p value = 0.011]

Conclusion: K. odoratissima hydroethanolic extract has an effective role in prevention of weight gain and enhanced liver catalase activity. Increasing in BMP7 gene expression probably causes alteration of WAT to brown adipose tissue [BAT]. According to this study, consumption of extract can reduce serum total antioxidant capacity and is likely to exacerbate oxidative stress

ABSTRACT

Statement of Problem: Because dental restorations are time consuming, dental material manufacturers make an attempt to discover new methods for rapidity and increasing the quality of restorations. With this objective in mind, plasma arc curing devices have been manufactured

Purpose: This study was done to compare the effect of plasma arc and halogen light curing on the microleakage of class V resin composite

Methods and Material: In this experimental study, on 80 extracted maxillary central teeth, standard class V cavities were prepared with incisal and gingival margins in the enamel and dentin. After etching and bonding, the teeth were randomly divided into two subgroups of 40 and restored with Amelogen composite. In the first group, halogen light curing for 40 seconds was used and in the second one plasma arc curing was used for four seconds. After thermocycling and sealing, the samples were immersed into the 0.5% fuchsine solution for 24 hours and then washed with water and cut. The microleakage was scored by stereomicroscope with 40X magnification. The data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests

Results: The mean of incisal wall microleakage in the plasma arc group was 1.42+/-0.98 and in the halogen group it was 0.67+/-0.02. The gingival margin in the plasma are group showed a mean of 1.75+/-1.48 and in the halogen group it was found to be 1.67+/-1.54. There were significant differences in the incisal wall [p =0.0001], but not in the gingival wall [p =0.744]. The average rate of microleakage in the gingival and incisal walls in the plasma arc group was 3.17+/-1.79 and in the halogen group it was 2.76+/-1.92; there were not any significant differences between the groups [p =0.32]

Conclusion: In the restorations with enamel margins halogen light curing and in all composite restorations plasma arc curing are preferred due to the short time of curing

ABSTRACT

As clinical improvement of patients surviving stroke is frequently incomplete and is followed by residual neurologic deficit, evaluation of the consequent function of these patients in three respects i.e; physical, social and emotional, which are considered as quality of life is useful in decision making for health care providers. Since few studies have been carried out in this regard, the aim of the present study was to obtain the average life quality score in four levels in aphasic stroke patients and comparing it with the quality of life score of the healthy population which is 5. This study was a descriptive-cross sectional research carried out on 105 aphasic stroke patients referring to medical centers in Hamadan, Iran. Their diagnoses were confirmed by clinical and radiological findings. These patients were eligible for the study and had survived the stroke for at least six months. Sampling was non randomized and goal-oriented. Dependent variables included psychological, communicational, energy and physical status of the patients measured quantitatively. Data were gathered using the SAQOL-39 questionnaire. In this study the female population [58.1%] was greater than the male. The greater number of the aphasic patients [42%] was between 71 to 85 years old and the smallest number [6.7%] was between 39 to 50 years old. The greatest average score of life quality in the studied patients was related to the psychological state [2.17], while the smallest was related to the energy state [1.49]. Average score of the life quality in the total population of the studied patients was calculated to be [1.88]. The findings of the present study can lead to special supportive measures with the aim of improving life quality in aphasic stroke patients. We suggest that life quality of the patient after stroke should be compared to his/her own quality of life before stroke. Because there is no special service for care providers of stroke patients, an international program should be planned so that by reducing stress, they could have a better relation with the patients
