ABSTRACT

Magnesium [Mg] ion has possible role in protecting neurons and glia from ischemic damage through the cerebral blood flow and neuronal action. This study was done to evaluate the correlation of total serum Mg level with clinical outcomes in stroke patients. This cross sectional study was done on 316 patients whom diagnosed with stroke in Imam Hossein hospital, Tehran, Iran during 2010-11. Mg levels in all patients were measured. Also, recurrent transient ischemic attack [TIA], recurrent myocardial infarction or stroke, unstable angina and death as clinical outcomes were follow-up for period of 3 and 6 months after admission. Data were analyzed using SPSS-18, Chi-Square, Fisher and Pearson correlation tests. The mean age of patients was 65 +/- 15.8 year. Limb weakness [69.9%] and haemoplasia with 63.6% were the most common clinical complaints. Death was the most common finding in 3 month [16.8%] and recurrent stroke was the most common finding in 6 month follow up [2.5%]. There was no significant difference between the total serum Mg and the first and second three-months follow up of clinical outcomes. This study can not show a significant correlation between total serum Mg levels and clinical outcomes after 3 and 6 month follow up in stroke patients

ABSTRACT

Use of herbs in aquaculture has become more common and rainbow trout is one of the fish that is widely cultured in most countries. The purpose of this study was to find the effect of Basil aqueous extract on growth, hematological and biochemical parameters in rainbow trout. The experimental treatments were formed by five different diets including: diet without Basil aqueous extract [control], diet with 30, 60, 120, 240 ppm Basil aqueous extract per food. Rainbow trout with an average weight of 12 +/- 2.6 g were fed with these diets for 48 days and at the end of experiment, growth parameters [FCR, SGR] and blood parameters were measured. Evaluation of FCR and SGR showed that there is no significant difference between the control and treatment group [30, 60, 120 and 240 ppm]. The result of hematological parameters were showed that basil aqueous extract increased RBC [1.24 +/- 0.04x10[6] mm[3]] in the 120 ppm group, and also increased WBC [22.7 +/- 3.4x10[3] mm3], Hemoglobin [6.3 +/- 0.6 g/dL] and the mean cell hemoglobin [57.1 +/- 3.8 pg], in the 240 ppm group. The result of biochemical parameters were showed that Basil aqueous extract decreased Cholesterol [163.7 +/- 20.15 mg/dL] and triglyceride [166.5 +/- 16.2 mg/dL] in the 30 ppm group. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in Glucose in the treatment group compare to the control. Seems that adding Basil aqueous extract to rainbow trout diet may improve the positive physiological characteristics

ABSTRACT

Leishmaniasis is not as severe as other diseases, often lesions are selfhealing. For various reason as long lasting duration of lesions and treatment, disfiguring scar reminding, secondary infection in lesions, have comfortable treatment method and accessible with less cost, it is necessary various method of treatment with less side effect. The results of previous studies showed that Indoleanalogues, Terpens, Iridoids, Quinones and Alkaloid hemisynthetic derivatives have promising antileishmanial potential. These derivatives were found in Thyme, Henna Yarrow and Garlic. Access to formulation drug without harmful chemical material and without side effect. After Inoculation of parasite in base tail of mice, during of three weeks caused lesions in inoculation place, then animal divided to 9 groups. In this study we used 4 alchoholic extract solution 2 times a day. we checked lesions weekly for six week and meseaured size of lesion in the base of tail with kulis - vernieh. Data of study analyzed with Anova, Paired t test and schefeh. We observed significant difference between mean of lesion in before and after treatment in control, Yarrow [Bomadaran] and Thyme [Avishan] groups [p<0.05]. Paired t test showed that there were not significant difference between mean of lesion in after treatment between groups of treatment and glucantime groups [p>0.05]. Alchoholic extract to Avishan and Boomadaran have good effect on lesions treatment, we suggest that the study could be repeated with Thyme [Avishan] and Yarrow [Bomadaran] extract in gel or cream base in first stage of lesions appearance
