ABSTRACT

Eighty patients with non-infusion superficial venous thrombosis were studied. The median age was 34 years [range 20-54], with a male to female ratio of 3:5. The median duration of symptoms was three days [range one day to one week]. The majority occurred in varicose vein, 25% occurred in normal veins and 12.5% were recurrent [thrombophlebitis migrans]. Six of the latter suffered from Buerger's disease, while the other four had abdominal malignancies. Deep vein thrombosis was detected in ten patients and two of the latter had varicose veins. Most of the patients were managed conservatively

ABSTRACT

Twenty-eight adjunctive arteriovenous fistulae [AVF] with reconstructive venous surgery were performed in postphlebitic lower extremities of patients with chronic venous insufficiency. The clinical, hemodynamic and phlebographic findings were compared prior and following reconstructive venous surgery with adjunctive AVF in 28 cases with a mean follow-up of 2 years. All cases that had early occlusion of their AVF, had their reconstructive venous graft thrombosed. Besides, AVF has not been found to influence venous valve competence. Moreover, the role of AVF as a primary procedure is tested by the significant improvement in the clinical and hemodynamic parameters of the patients in whom the graft failed early and the AVF was left patent. Technically, the interposition H-shaped type using the prolene loop procedures is the most convenient to facilitate its closure
