ABSTRACT

1. In 1966 a group of 985 individuals from different localities in the Philippines were vaccinated with Beckenham 31 strain of chick-adapted live attenuated measles virus vaccine, by one single dose injected subcutaneously or intramuscularly2. Of this group, it was possible to follow-up closely 528 individuals. The most important clinical reactions were fever (53.2%), rash (25.8%), respiratory symptom (15.9%) and tonsilitis (8.1%)3. "Vaccine-induced" measles causes mild brief symptoms as compared to "natural" measles, in patients who were observed simultaneously in the hospital4. The sero-conversion rate in 185 vaccinees showed a very good rise in 65% and a less significant rise in 21%5. Only 10.8% of the vaccinees gave no rise and these were among those who had an active immunity or detectable amounts of antibody prior to vaccination. On the whole the antibody response was good6. In this study we have enough evidence to show that immunization with the attenuated live measles virus vaccine is safe and serologically effective. (Summary and conclusions)n

ABSTRACT

1. The incidence of empyema complicating pneumonic infections is higher in the low income group than in the higher income group, the difference being statistically significant2. Empyema is more common in males than in females. No explanation can be offered for this finding3. The most common etiological agent was various strains of staphylococci. The pneumococcus appears to be less frequently involved in this disease entity as in other respiratory infections4. Mortality is highest in the age group below 1 year. However, a review of the literature on empyemas shows that mortality rates from this entity is lower in more recent years5. Repeated thoracentesis yields quite satisfactory results, provided there is adequate antibiotic coverage. (Summary and Conclusions)

ABSTRACT

Pyrvinium pamoate (Vanquin) was administered in a single dose of one teaspoonful for every 10 Kg. or 22 lbs. of body weight to 50 children ranging in age from 1-13 years found positive for Enterobius vermicularis ova by the scotch tape test. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that this dose given only once to the patient and the other members of the household at the same time insures 100 per cent cure with just one dose. The drug, besides its effectivity on pinworms, offers other advantages in the single oral dose and also the absence of toxic side effectsThere may still be no real answer to the pinworm problem, but for the present Pyrvinium pamoate serves as a suitable and effective drug against this annoying parasitic infestation - the pinworm. ABSTRACT

Blood studies were performed on a total of 167 newborn offsprings of leprous mothers on sulfone therapy during the first seven to eight months of pregnancy. These studies were repeated periodically at weekly intervals up to the age of 6 months. Concomitantly, blood sulfone level determinations were done on both mother and the newborn infantAnemia was found to be a consistent finding in 92.5% of the infants. However, after taking into consideration the prenatal history of the mothers under study, and after comparing these blood pictures with those of newborn infants of supposedly normal mothers who have never received sulfone therapy, it may be concluded that sulfone therapy to pregnant leprous women does not cause deleterious effects on the blood of their offspringThe drug apparently does not have teratogenic effects. (Summary and Conclusions)
