ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to 81 patients suffering from thalassemia, the aim of the work was to evaluate the role of the properties of the heme atom in the hemoglobin molecule and to what extend thalassemia may alter the normal magnetic behavior of it. Patients were divided into 2 groups: heterozygous, homozygous which was subdivided into two subgroups [splenoctomic and non-splenoctomic patients] and the normal control group. Results showed that the blood count of these patients was almost near to the normal in the heterozygous, non-splenoctomic patients showed higher levels of non-functional hemoglobin derivatives. Magnetic properties of heme as measured in magnetic susceptibility, auto-oxidation rate and also results obtained from the absorption spectra of hemoglobin verify that heme atom in both homozygous groups were elevated, Non-splenoctomic patients showed the highest level hence its heme atoms shifted to the paramagnetic region in which heme cannot carry out its normal function and has a low affinity of both oxygen and globin

ABSTRACT

Lead poisoning still a dominant problem in all countries world wide. Treatment of lead poisoning is called chelation therapy. The aim of this work was to verify the chelation potency of angelica officinalis herb water extraction as it mentioned before in the Traditional Arabic Method. Results obtained by application of this extraction compared with those obtained from application of the most common chelator in the world [DMSA]. Results showed a strong chelation potency of the extraction against lead in blood, bone, liver and brain. Natural chelator was better that derived chemically hence no free radicals formed through chelation process, that verified by measuring the SOD and glutathione peroxidase activity. Groups received treatment without continuous exposure to lead gave better results than those received the treatment with continuous exposure to lead, i.e. it is very essential to avoid the toxicity test before starting the treatment courses

ABSTRACT

This study consists of 72 diabetic patients of type I and 52 diabetic patients of type II besides 35 normal control of matched age and sex. There are some alleles more frequent in IDDM group than in control. In patients, they are DQA1 *0301/2,*0102, *0101- DQBl*0201,*0302,*0602-3,*0301- DRB1*0101,*0301,*04,1101,. While in normal control, they are DQAI*0101,*0102,*103,*0201,*0501 DQBI*0301,*0602-3,*0201,*0601 ORB1*1101,*1501/2/3. Three times high positive percent were observed regarding rubella IgM of IDDM as compared to NIDDM while it was zero percent with respect to control
