ABSTRACT

A retrospective study of 20 patients treated by a modified Maquet operation for patellofemoral osteoarthritis was carried out. The result after a mean follow-up period of 3.8 years was 60%satisfactory. The final results were not significantly affected by the age, sex and preoperative patellofemoral osteoarthritis. The single factors that significantly affected the results was the union of the graft at the osteotomy site. Although the early and late assessments have shown equal satisfactory results [60%], yet there was a trend for the result to improve with time

ABSTRACT

Twenty-two cases with 23 tarsometatarsal fracture dislocation were treated and followed up for an average of 20 months. Fourteen fractures achieved good results, six achieved fair results and three achieved poor results. It was found that anatomical reduction is mandatory for satisfactory results whatever the method of treatment adopted. Redisplacement is a common sequel of unstable injuries. In this series, it occurred in seven fractures due to early removal of the Kirschner wire, subsidence of edema after closed reduction without Kirschner wire fixation or failure to achieve anatomical reduction due to severe comminution. Not all cases of post-traumatic degenerative arthritis were symptomatic; 6 out of 14 feet with degenerative arthritis in this series were symptomatic

ABSTRACT

Thirty patients with simple fractures of the lateral humeral condyle were treated by open reduction and internal fixation with a screw of the small set. Three cases [10%] were type I, 15 [50%] type II and 12 [40%] type III [according to the classification of Wadsworth 1982]. [7] Twenty four patients [80%] were operated upon, within the first week after the onset of the fracture and six patients [20%] within the second week. Post-operative posterior plaster slab was used for 3-4 weeks for all of them. The least follow up period was three months, the longest was twelve. More satisfactory results were obtained in the older age group [8-11 years], patients who had no associated injury, anatomical reduction, and in longer follow up period. Some complications had been reported in the present study

ABSTRACT

Thirty patients with recent simple displaced fractures of the lateral humeral codyle were treated by open reduction and internal fixation with a screw of the small set. Ten children with complications had been reported in the present study as infection, alternation in the carrying angle, lateral condyle overgrowth, fish-tail deformity, avascular necrosis, and non-union and fragmentation of the distal fragment. Myositis ossificans was not recorded

ABSTRACT

Forty cases of displaced fracture of the neck of the fifth metacarpal bone were treated alternatingly by closed reduction and immobilization with plaster slab for three weeks [group I] and closed reduction and fixation by percutaneous longitudinal intramedullary K wire for three weeks, [group II]. The age ranged from 10-45 years with an average of 26 years. Males were 95% of the cases and right hand was affected in 65%, A direct trauma was the commonest type of trauma. The satisfactory results in both group occured in high percentage of cases. But the results in group II [90%] were insignificantly better than group I [80%]. The period of disability was shorter in group II [4 weeks], than those in group I [6 weeks]. The results were found to be affected by occupation, right or left handed, angulation, shortening of the affected metacarpal bone and the time lag before operation and they were statistically significant

ABSTRACT

Sixty adult patients with fracture of the head radius of Type I and Type II according to Mason [1] were studied. Two methods of treatment were used: The conservative in which the elbow was fixed in an above-elbow plaster for 3 weeks, and the surgical by total excision of the radial head. At the final assessment it was found that the conservative method achieved better results both as regards movement and residual pain

ABSTRACT

Fifty four cases of fracture of the base of the fifth metatarsal bone were the subject of this study. The fracture was found to be more common in females below the age of fourty. Indirect trauma was the cause of the fracture in 85% of cases. Simple avulsion fracture constituted 33.3% of all types in the whole material. The cases were classified into two groups without selection for comparison of two methods of conservative treatment. Both methods gave generally satisfactory results. However immobilization was found preferable in old age, in displaced fractures and in fractures, with intra-articular involvement
