ABSTRACT

Otitis media with effusion is one of the most common chronic conditions of childhood [Postsic et al., 1997]. Management of Otitis media with effusion [OME], consists of adenoidectomy, middle ear irrigation and post operative antibiotics, with Grommet Tube insertion gave a significant better cure rate of OME than using only one of these three methods with Grommet tube insertion or performing Grommet tube insertion alone. This were evaluated clinically and bacteriologically in 25 children with OME and found a significant relationship between positive bacterial cultures and endotoxin

ABSTRACT

This study was designed to investigate Histological and morphological features of the normal inferior turbinate. 12 specimens were removed under local anesthesia from nose after consent of the patient. The specimens were investigated microscopically to study the human mixed nasal glands. The inferior turbinate was almost exclusively covered with a pseudo stratified ciliated columnar epithelium that housed more goblet cells on its lateral side. The main bulk of the inferior turbinate was the lamina propria. Glands of the lamina propria were of the type's serous, seromucous, and mucous types., In glandular cells serous granules were homogeneously dense, but could have a small lighter core; while seromucous granules had a dense rim and a large compartment of appreciably lighter density. Gradation between serous and seromucous granules made precise identification of these secretory cell types difficult. Mucous cells were of conventional morphology. The secretary tubules, which possessed myoepithelial cells, gradually transformed into ducts., The ductular portions of the tubules consisted either of tall prismatic cells or of shorter columnar cells, both of which lacked secretory granules. The observed structural arrangement helps the glands to play a role in the humidification of inspired air. It suggests the best site of removal of tissue during turbinectomy, in which the least glandular part should be selected in order to preserve the function

ABSTRACT

This study was done on six dog la-rynges. The larynges were opened at the posterior midline. The medial position of each vocal fold was removed with the free edge centrally placed. The specimens were performed by a horizontal sections at the level of the free edge. Spatial arrangement of the vocal fold layered structure was studied by scaning electron microscope [SEM], transmission electron microscope [TEM] and some histological staining techniques [Hx. and E]. and Van Gieson- Weigert and Tolui-dine blue stains. The free edge of the vocal fold is considered to be the most medial aspect of the vocal fold in a horizontal plane and refers to an anterior to posterior arrangement of its membraneous position. This study encompasses the spatial arrangement of all major elements of the vocal fold layers. It was demonstrated that the vocal fold epithelial cells, the connective tissue and muscle fibres, and even the blood vessels run parallel to the vocal fold free edge, which indicates a high adjustment to the phonation requirements- and the vibration process

ABSTRACT

Psychogenic elements may be reflected in the form of somatic or organic diseases so analysis of these elements and its effects through a questionnaire, evaluation of each case separately, traditional vocal exercises and settings for educational explanation of the nature of precipitated psychogenic symptoms may relieve this symptoms which often result from inability to cope with certain circumstances. In the present study, thirty patients with psychogenic dysphonia were selected from Department of Otolaryngology, University of Pennsylvania, during the period from March to September 2000 for analysis of psychological effects of life events on voice and estimation of percentage of psychogenic dysphonia [PD] in relation to the other organic diseases. It was found that cases of PD increased as a result of psychological stress and inability to cope with unfamiliar life events. Effect of short term therapy was good to moderate. Relapses were not reported. The results indicated that interpersonal conflicts related to work were of basic importance in precipitating this condition
