ABSTRACT

This prospective randomized study was done to study the effect of patellar denervation on the outcome of patients undergoing non- patellar resurfacing total knee arthroplasty. Forty patients with knee osteoarthritis that were indicated for total knee arthroplasty and having evident patellofemoral osteoarthritis were randomized into two groups of 20 patients each. Every patient in each group underwent non-patellar resurfacing total knee arthroplasty with the same technique, but one group had only debridement of the patella from osteophytes and the other group had patellar denervation in addition to debridement. The patients were followed up for at least nine months. The study showed that using the technique of patellar denervation with non-resurfacing total knee arthroplasty resulted in a better pain relief and gives better results based on the Knee Society scoring system with very few complications
