Dental extraction under local anaesthesia and high risk complications in cardiac patients

Thirty cardiac patients with different heart diseases, aged 32-51 years with a mean of 44.3 years, were clinically and electrocardiographically [ECG] examined before and after injection of local anesthetic and dental extraction [experimental group]. The local anesthetic used was mepivacaine HCl 3% without vasoconstrictor. A second healthy control group of 15 normal individuals with similar ages was examined. ECG results were analyzed and compared to identify which group of cardiac patients is mostly at risk during dental extractions. It was found that the old myocardial infarction plus post infarction angina and high risk patients need hospitalization and cardiac monitoring for any dental surgical interventions
