ABSTRACT

The study was conducted a period of two years, 48 cases of newly diagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukemia were collected from the pediatric ward / oncology unit of Al- Kadlymia Teaching hospital together with 48 age and sex matched healthy children were taken as a control. The age of the patients range from 1.8-14 years. The majority were between [6-10] years 22 cases [45.85%]. 27cases [56.25%] were males and 2lcases [43.75%] females. Male: female ratio equal to 1.3:1. According to FAB morphological classification L2 constitute the majority ~29 cases [60.42%]. A white cell counts greater then 100.000/cm was encountered in the minority of cases, 5 cases only [10.41%], 3 of them were males and were more than 10 years of age. Mediastinal mass was found in 7 cases [1-4.58%] who were mainly males having FAB-L2. Immunofluorescence phenotyping of the peripheral blood lymphoblast has revealed that the patients had a higher mean percent of CD19, CDS then the control group, which is statistically highly significant [18.16+/- 5.47, 32.52+/-6.66] and [13.60+/-2.78, 19.91+/- 2.11] respectively. There was no much difference in the mean percent of CD3 and CD4 between the patients and the control group. [75.43.70, 43.2510.56] and [73.35 +/-11.55, 40.97 +/-7.77] respectively. In the patients group the mean percent of CDIO was [49.413+/-8.70], it was not done in the control group. According to this result, most of the patients had B-cell precursor leukemia, 30 cases [62.50% Followed by T-cell precursor leukemia, 18 cases [37.50 %]

ABSTRACT

To determine the accuracy of clinical examination in reference to ultrasound examination for liver span. Design: A case - series study. Participants: Ninety-seven patients suffering from liver diseases who were sent to the ultrasound examination. Setting: From January 1996 to December 1996 patients suffering from liver diseases who were sent to radiological department in Ebin Sina hospital in Mosul. Main outcome measures: Liver measuring more than 14 cm in vertical height is considered to be enlarged [positive], while liver measuring 14 cm or less is considered to be normal [negative], in both clinical and ultrasound examination. The liver span was different when measured by ultrasound as compared with clinical examination. The p-value was <0.05, which indicates a significant difference of 5% level [p < 0.05]. The ultrasound examination was better than clinical examination. The sensitivity of the clinical examination in this aspect is proved to be 53%, specificity 94% while the accuracy is 77%. Ultrasound examination is superior to the clinical assessment in detecting the liver span and thus we conclude that referring patients for ultrasound examination to estimate liver span and hence liver size is still valid; moreover ultrasound examination will give more details for the liver state and structure
