ABSTRACT

This paper attempts to analyze the the role of advancement in communication technology and technological development specially Television. It focuses on the role of television in individual behavior, our culture, political sphere and social relations. Economic impact of television and the impact of religious advancement were also discussed. It is concluded that the prospects of the electronic media in Pakistan seem bright marked by rapid expansion, technological growth, professional and skilled manpower. The viewing of TV is gaining popularity across the nation, showing interest of the people in times of leisure and enjoyment. No medium is more influential than television in educating, being within reach of masses, arousing awareness and bringing the universe within the global village. It has everlasting impact on all spheres of human life and any kind of surrounding environments. However, much more has to be done and researched to attain maximum benefits from television, instead of using it for vested interests of the stakeholders

ABSTRACT

When a cigarette is smoked, about one-half of the smoke generated is side stream smoke. This form of smoke contains essentially all of the same carcinogenic [cancer causing] and toxic agents that have been identified in the mainstream smoke inhaled by the smoker, but at greater levels. As smoking from different sources is pollution and injurious to health, so we planned to carry out cigarette smoking survey of citizens of different localities of Mansehra. The study was carried out on 2100 subjects residing in different localities of Mansehra. A specifically designed questionaire was filled individually. Out of the study population 850 [40.48%] were found to be indulged in cigarette smoking. The study suggested that smokers should avoid smoking for the sake of their health

ABSTRACT

Several trace elements are present in drinking water. They play various important roles in the body, provided their level remains within the specification/ recommendation given from time to time by WHO. The study was carried out during the year 2005. Drinking water samples were collected from different sources and localities of District West of Karachi. After collection of samples, the concentration of the trace elements i.e. Lead, Arsenic, Copper, Iron, Mercury, Chromium, Manganese, Nickel, Cadmium and Zinc were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. Concentrations of lead and nickel were found to be highly significantly elevated as compared to WHO recommended levels in all the three sources of water [Piped water, Hand pump water and Tanker water supply] in District West of Karachi. Chromium was found to be raised as compared with the WHO recommended level in hand pump water of District West. Arsenic and Mercury were not detected in any source of water in District West. Copper, iron, manganese, cadmium and zinc were found to be within the safe limits set by WHO in all the three sources of water of District West. Concentrations of lead and nickel were found to be highly significantly elevated as compared to WHO recommended levels in all the three sources of water [Piped water, Hand pump water and Tanker water supply] in District West of Karachi.
