ABSTRACT

Cytological evaluation of serous effusions often poses difficulties to the pathologists. This study was designed to assess the utility of fibronectin as a mesothelial cell marker and evaluate its use along with carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) as a short panel to aid in the differentiation of reactive mesothelial cells from metastatic adenocarcinoma cells in serous effusions. Forty serous effusion cases from clinically benign cases and forty from clinically malignant cases with a known primary were included in the study. After routine cytological evaluation, the cases were categorized as benign, suspicious and malignant. All the cases were studied for fibronectin and CEA immunostaining using APAAP technique. In the present study, fibronectin emerged as a 100% specific and 93.4% sensitive marker for mesothelial cells. CEA immunostaining was seen in 80% cases of metastatic adenocarcinoma in serous effusions. Mesothelial cells did not show any CEA positivity. Short panel of CEA and fibronectin aided in reaching a correct diagnosis in three out of five cytologically suspicious cases.

ABSTRACT

Presence of microfilaria in the thyroid gland is a rare finding. Filariasis is a common public health problem in the Indian sub-continent. Most of the cases of microfilaria in thyroid gland reported in the literature are associated with goiter and thyroid neoplasms. Here, we present a rare case that showed microfilaria on fine needle aspiration cytology of solitary thyroid nodule.

ABSTRACT

Plexiform schwannoma is a morphologically distinct and rare variant of schwannoma. It occurs most commonly in head and neck region and measures less than 2 cm in size. It is a benign tumor and malignant transformation has not been reported. We are presenting a case of plexiform schwannoma occurring on scalp and measuring 8cm in size because of its rarity and unusual size.

ABSTRACT

Teratomas showing organoid development of intestine are rare. Such cases are mostly described in ovary and sacrococcygeal region. We describe the clinical, radiological and pathological findings of an unusual case of teratoma with colonic loops in a three months old child in retroperitoneal location.

ABSTRACT

Chondroid syringoma or mixed tumor of the skin is an uncommon tumor that typically presents as small, solitary, slow growing, firm, subcutaneous or intracutaneous nodule. It presents commonly in the head and neck region. This is a case report of 45-year-old female who presented with multiple masses in the flank, chest wall, arm, -thigh and neck measuring 10, 6, 3.5, 2 and 1 cm in maximum dimension. FNAC and excision biopsy revealed benign chondroid syringoma. This is a rare case of chondroid syringoma exhibiting large size, multiplicity and unusual locations in flank, chest wall and thigh.

ABSTRACT

Mural nodules are rare lesions seen in the walls of mucinous cystic tumours of ovary and are exceptionally rare in other ovarian neoplasms. The histological pattern of these mural nodules varies greatly from the mucinous tumours themselves. A rare case of a sarcoma like mural nodule is presented here which has microscopic resemblance to malignancy but is associated with good clinical outcome.
