ABSTRACT

Pleurotus ostreatus cv. Florida is one of the widely used edible mushroom. The polysaccharides from this mushrooms have been studied for antidiabetic potential; however, no efforts have been made to explore the potential of this mushroom to influence carbohydrate metabolizing enzymes viz. ?-amylase and ?-glucosidase. The present work was undertaken to investigate the inhibitory potential of Pleurotus ostreatus cv. Florida on enzymes ?-amylase and ?-glucosidase. Several concentrations of extracts were used to study inhibition of enzymatic activity of ?-amylase and ?-glucosidase. A dose dependent inhibitory effect on enzymes was observed. The current study, for the first time, uncovered ?-amylase and ?-glucosidase inhibitory potential of Pleurotus ostreatus cv. Florida. The study could be helpful to isolate and characterize compounds responsible for it.

ABSTRACT

Aprospective randomised study comparing radiographic results of 10 patients treated for scaphoid nonunion using a vascularised bone graft from the dorsum of distal radius (group I), relative to 10 patients treated by means of non vascularised bone graft from the iliac crest(group II). Bone union was achieved in 7 of 10 patients group I and 4 of 10 group II patients. Functional results were good to excellent in 7 of the patients in group I and 6 in group II. Our study conclude that vascularised bone grafting yields superior results in scaphoid nonunion.

ABSTRACT

Background: Thromboelastography (TEG) is relatively recent assay to analyze the coagulation state of a blood sample, providing a continuous visualization of physical changes occurring during blood coagulation. There is a paucity of published literature on assessment of coagulation status using TEG in Indian population. Aim: The primary aim of the following study is to establish normal reference values for TEG in North Indian healthy volunteers and secondary aim is to compare them with conventional plasma-based routine coagulation tests and the manufacturers reference range. Materials and Methods: A total of 200 healthy volunteers comprised of 100 males and 100 females of age groups between 20 and 50 years, were enrolled over a period of 1 year, i.e., 2011-2012. Thromboelastometry (TEM) was performed on TEM-A automated thromboelastometer (Framar Biomedica, Rome, Italy), using whole blood non-additive (360 μl). TEG parameters analyzed were r-time, k-time, α-angle, maximal amplitude (MA). Prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and platelet count was performed for all volunteers. The 95% reference range was calculated as (mean-1.96 standard deviation [SD]) to (mean + 1.96 SD). Results: Our reference values for 95% of 200 volunteers were r-time: 1.8-14.2 min, k-time: 0.7-7.3 min, α-angle: 27.3-72.3° and MA: 32.1-87.9 mm. Maximum clot strength was higher in women compared with men, however statistically insignifi cant. Overall 14.5% (29/200) of the volunteers had at least one abnormal parameter while 74% (149/200) had deranged TEG values using the manufacturer’s reference range. Statistically signifi cant variation was seen in r-time for 84.8% (P < 0.001), for k-time, in 87.1% (P < 0.001), for α-angle in 83.7% (P < 0.001) and for MA in 84% (P < 0.001), between the manufacturer and our reference range. Conclusion: The effi cacy of classical coagulation test has been well-established; on the contrary TEG is a fairly recent assay and its utility for patient management remains to be demonstrated. We observed TEG to be oversensitive in determining coagulopathy where there is no clinical presentation. The manufacturer’s reference values may not be appropriate for different ethnicity. TEG may give an overall representation of hemostasis; however, it cannot replace the conventional coagulation tests. We recommend the determination of normal TEG values by each laboratory for their target population.

ABSTRACT

Odontogenic myxoma is a slow growing benign, locally malignant tumor, notorious for recurrence. It represents a broadspectrum of lesions of uncertain histogenesis with a characteristic histologic appearance. We report a rare case of odontogenic myxoma in a 10-year-old male patient and present the respective strategy for the management of a huge myxoma of right-side of maxilla via an intraoral approach after a brief review of its clinical and radiological features.

ABSTRACT

We report a four year old boy who was detected to have an occipital intradiploic pseudomeningocele three years following a traumatic skull fracture, and which was managed by ventriculo-peritoneal shunt placement. Traumatic intradiploic pseudomeningoceles behave differently from traditional growing skull fractures and may require individualized management decisions.

ABSTRACT

A 26-year-old woman presented with sudden defective vision in the right eye following lifting a heavy bucket of water. Examination showed a dense premacular subhyaloid haemorrhage associated with arteriovenous communications of the retina (AVCRs). Spontaneous absorption of the premacular haemorrhage with consequent improvement in the visual acuity was seen after two months. The possible aetiopathogenesis of the case is also discussed.

ABSTRACT

This study was designed to evaluate the indications for ventriculoperitoneal shunting in cases of children with tubercular meningitis, presenting with hydrocephalus. Thirty seven children (less than 18 years of age) of tubercular meningitis with hydrocephalus (TBMH) who underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunting over a three year period (1999 to 2001) were included in the study. Sixteen (43%) children were Palur stage II, 15 (40%) stage III, and 6 (16%) stage IV. Fifteen (40%) children had received antitubercular therapy for less than 4 months and 17 (46%) received therapy for more than 4 months prior to presentation. Five (14%) children had not previously received antitubercular therapy. Shunt related complications occurred in 11 (30%) children and 3 children had undergone revision of the shunt multiple times. Good outcome was seen in 16 (43%) children. Thirteen (35%) had moderate disability and 6 (16%) had severe disability at 3 months of follow up. 62% (n =10) children in grade II had a good outcome compared to 40% (n = 6) in grade III. All six children in grade IV had a poor outcome. 2 children, both having multiple infarcts, died and the remaining 4 were left with severe disability. We recommend shunt placement in all children of grade II and III TBMH as this policy has yielded the best results. For grade IV children external ventricular drainage, followed by shunting if improvement occurs remains the most cost-effective procedure.
