Two hundred patients [50 abdominal surgery, 100 cancer, and 50 heart] were interviewed as to their perceived educational needs. The results of the study showed that patients want information; they want it written and prefer to get it from physicians. The most important educational, needs for the whole sample were those of diagnosis, discharge plans and medication. There were, however, significant differences between the three groups under study.
