ABSTRACT

Background/Aims@#Colonoscopy for screening is associated with unpleasant experiences for patients, and abdominal compression devices have been developed to minimize these problems. However, there is a paucity of data supporting the therapeutic benefits of this strategy. This study examined the effects of using an abdominal compression device during colonoscopy on the cecal intubation time (CIT), abdominal compression, patient comfort, and postural changes. @*Methods@#We searched PubMed and Scopus (from inception to November 2021) for randomized controlled trials that assessed the effects of an abdominal compression device during colonoscopy on CIT, abdominal compression, patient comfort, and postural change. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed. Weighted mean differences (WMDs) and Mantel-Haenszel odds ratios (ORs) were calculated. @*Results@#Our pooled analysis of seven randomized controlled trials revealed that abdominal compression devices significantly reduced CIT (WMD, –0.76 [–1.49 to –0.03] minutes; p=0.04), abdominal compression (OR, 0.52; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.28–0.94; p=0.03), and postural changes (OR, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.27–0.78; p=0.004) during colonoscopy. However, our results did not show a significant change in patient comfort (WMD, –0.48; 95% CI, –1.05 to 0.08; p=0.09) when using an abdominal compression device. @*Conclusions@#Our findings demonstrate that employing an abdominal compression device may reduce CIT, abdominal compression, and postural change but have no impact on patient comfort.

ABSTRACT

Objective: PEM is a significant nutritional disorder in India. The aim of this study was to assess the severity of the disorder and make a quick nutritional assessment in the patients using serum albumin, total cholesterol and lymphocyte count as the laboratory parameters. The study also aimed at correlating these biochemical parameters with physical parameters. Materials and Methods: 42 clinically undernourished children in the age group of 2-5yrs were enrolled for the study. Their age and body weight were noted and the subjects were accordingly grouped under Grade 1, 2 or 3 malnutrition as per Gomez’ classification. Serum Albumin, total lymphocyte count and total cholesterol values of these cases were noted. Depending on the values obtained, the subjects were grouped into 3 categories – mild, moderate and severe malnutrition. Physicalparameters were correlated with the biochemical parameters. Results: Pearson’s correlation test results showed a significant positive correlation between Grade 1&mild malnutrition; Grade 2&moderate malnutrition; and Grade III & severe malnutrition. Conclusion: We conclude that serum albumin, cholesterol and total lymphocyte count correlate significantly with physical parameters. They are reliable parameters that can be used not only to assess severity of undernutrition but they also provide more informationabout the nutritional status such as protein and lipid reserves in the body and immune status of the individual.

ABSTRACT

The learning environment affects the learning of medical students and their practice as physicians. The objective of the present study was to assess the perceptions of medical students towards the learning environment in a new a Medical School in Saudi Arabia. This is a cross-sectional study, which used the self-administered validated Dundee Ready Education Environment [DREEM] questionnaire as a tool. The study was performed at the Faculty of Medicine, King Fahad Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The study population was all medical students enrolled in the academic year 2009/2010. The main outcome measure was the perception of students of the overall educational environment. The DREEM questionnaire, which consists of 50 items scored on a 0-4 Likert scale, was completed by 237 medical students [85% of total students]. The mean total score was 111.5 out of a maximum of 200, indicating a relatively low satisfaction with the perceived environment. There were no individual areas of excellence [item scoring >3.5 points]. Ten items scored consistently <50% indicating cause for concern. These included the long term atmosphere of learning, teaching methods, students' ability to concentrate and teachers' and students' attitudes. This study identified areas of concern in the educational environment within this new medical college. Corrective measures need to be considered. Upon the implementation of those measures, the DREEM tool can be used to re-evaluate the environment.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to examine some plant extracts and natural products for anti-tumor activity. Potato disc bioassay was used to estimate anti-tumor activity of some plant extracts and natural products. Five plant extracts and natural products recommended in a questionnaire filled by local botanists in addition to an introduced fermented food [Manda Koso] were used in this study. A questionnaire was designed and filled by 60 botanists looking for plant extracts and natural products having anti-cancer activity. In addition, computer surveys were conducted for gathering information on promising natural compounds act as anticancer agents. The potato disc bioassay was conducted using the Complete Randomized Design with three replicates. Each treatment in each replicate was represented by two Petri dishes contained five potato discs each. Petri dishes treated with sterilized water were used as control. Four separate experiments were carried out using TLC technique. Results showed highly significant differences among treatments with respect to total number of tumors and inhibition average percentage [%]. The inhibition average percentage [IAP] for the different products ranged between 80.95-100% for the different products and equal zero for the control. It was 100% for Manda Kosa and bees honey followed by 90.23% for olive oil. Other treatments showed moderate anti-tumor effect of 80.95% IAP. Results concluded that Manda Koso, bees honey and olive oil have anti-tumor activity. Great association was found between anti-tumor activity obtained in this study and those published for anticancer activity of the promising material

ABSTRACT

To determine the prevalence of headache, its different patterns and associated symptoms in school children. A population based, cross-sectional, questionnaire study, followed by interviews of selected cases and their opthalmoscopic examination was conducted in eight secondary schools from different parts of Karachi to cover all socioeconomic groups. A total of 1211 school children aged 12 to 20 years, were included. The main outcome measures studied were, prevalence of headache, associated symptoms and impact of positive family history. The estimated prevalence rate of headache in school children was 85.5%. Of them 43.1% had mild, 46.6% had moderate and 8.8% had severe headache. Nearly half of them [49.6%] had a frequency of 3 or less episodes per month. Majority [58.7%] had no warning symptoms. The most common symptom prior to headache was subjective weakness [19.0%] followed by sensitivity to light [11.5%]. The most common site was frontal headache [30.4%] and in 66.7% of the cases it was aching in character. Complaint of noise and light intolerance during headache was reported by 38.2%, 17.1% sought medical advice and only 0.4% needed hospitalization ever. Of those taking medicines [n =424 [41%] majority [82.3%] were self medicated. A positive family history was present in 52.5% children. All selected study subjects were found to have normal optic discs on ophthalmoscopic examination. Headache is a major health problem in school children. It is inappropriately treated and there is strong impact of family history

ABSTRACT

To investigate the additional predictor value of different immunological and serological parameters by evaluating the relationships of these parameters to each other, to the activity, and to the radiological damage in RA patients with different disease durations and grades of activity. Sixty patients [53 females and 7 males], mean age 36.2 years [range 20 - 57] and median disease duration from <6 weeks-28 years were evaluated clinically, with laboratory and radiology in the Rheumatology Department of Assiut University Hospital. Patients met the 1987 American College of Rheumatology Revised [ACR] Criteria. The disease duration didn't seem to influence the rate of occurrence of RF or ANA. The results presented here support that there was a significant positive correlation between CRP with the mean disease grading activity MDGA [p<0.01] and with the degree of radiological damage [p=0.02]. While RF levels in seropositive patients with different grades of activity did not correlate with any of the disease parameters used for assessment of the patients. However, positive RF positively correlated with radiological damage [p=0.04]. ANA positivity only correlated with pain score but not with grades of the disease activity or the severity of the radiological damage
