ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of the present study was to explore the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress in medical students and their attitude towards seeking professional psychological help [ATSPPH]. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Data was collected from five medical universities of Pakistan, from Oct 2017 to Feb 2018


Material and Methods: A total of 273 medical students participated in the study. The age range of the participants lied between 18 to 28 years. Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale [DASS-21], Attitude towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale [ATSPPH-S] and demographic questionnaire were administered on the participants


Results: Results were analyzed and high prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress was found [59%, 74.9%, and 52.5% respectively]. Further, it was found that positive attitude towards seeking professional help was associated with less prevalence of psychological symptoms while high for those who holds negative attitude towards the need for help


Conclusion: It can be concluded that psychological problems are a prevalent issue in the medical students. Demanding and challenging nature of their academic and professional responsibilities impacts their well-being. There is dire need of paradigm shift in the attitude towards the stigma attached to mental illness and provision of professional help if required in order to improve the overall mental health and well-being of medical students

ABSTRACT

A 50 years old lady presented with excessive hair growth on her body, pain and mass in lower abdomen. She was menopausal, had 8 children, her face and her whole body was covered with black coarse hair. There was a complex irregular fixed mass in lower abdomen which corresponded to 18 weeks of gestation. The serum testosterone and urinary 24 hour 17-ketosteroids were raised. It was suspected to be a case of androgen producing tumor. Laparotomy was done. It turned out to be an advanced ovarian malignancy. Biopsies were taken and sent for histopathology. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of malignant lipoid cell tumor of the ovary. These are very very rare tumors, and constitute less than 0.1% of ovarian tumors

ABSTRACT

Obstructed Labour. To determine the frequency, risk factors, complications and maternal and foetal out come of obstructed labour. A tertiary care teaching Hospital. A retrospective study conducted at the department of Obstetric and Gynecology Unit II Sandeman Provincial Hospital Quetta. The Patients were selected on a random basis as they were admitted through emergency. 98 cases of obstructed labour were managed during the study period. All were non booked, illiterate majority belonged to poor socio-economical class, and came from far flung areas of Balochistan and Afghanistan. The most vulnerable group was grand multipara in third decade of life. The leading cause of obstruction was cephalopelvic disproportion. There was one rare case of Locked Twin and one very rare case of 6.0 x 4.5 cm vesical stone as cause of obstruction. 74 cases[74.5%] were managed by caesarean section. Out of 14 cases of Ruptured uterus 10[10.2%] were subjected to caesarean hysterectomy and the rest four were managed by repair with or without ligation in groups of two. Urinary fistula was found in 10 cases out of which two were ureteric fistulae and eight were vesico-vaginal. The over all perinatal mortality rate was 87%, with 100% in referred cases. The maternal mortality rate was < 1.0/ thousand in the referred cases. No maternal death occurred in cases who developed obstruction in the hospital
