ABSTRACT

The topography of corneas after penetrating keratoplasty is highly variable. We classify the topography into five groups. We performed videokeratography on 45 clear compact penetrating keratoplasties, with all sutures removed. Three ophthalmologists classified the keratographs into five previously defined topographic groups, based on the pattern of the normalized color-coded videokeratograph. The five topographic patterns included: prolate bow tie, 14[30%]; oblate bow tie, 14[30%]; mixed prolate and oblate bow tie, 8[17%]; asymmetric, 3[9%]; and radially asymmetric 6[14%]. The three ophthalmologists agreed in their initial classification in 87% of the cases and after discussion, in 96%. The topography of the cornea after penetrating keratoplasty can be classified into five qualitative groups by trained observers, with good clinical reliability

ABSTRACT

We studied a total of 52 cases of fungal ocular infections in Saudi Arabia. Mycotic keratitis predominates the cases [84.6%]. History of trauma was given in 55.7% of cases, previous use of antibiotics in 40%., and use of steroids in only 9.6%. Majority of patients are middle-aged males [67.3%]. The most frequent cause of oculomycosis was found to be Aspergillus Spp. [53.8%]. Other etiologic organisms includes: Fusarium Spp. [23%]., yeast [9.6%], and dematecious molds [9.6%] Our disc microbroth antifungal susceptibility test was found to be comparable with the standardized National Committee of Clinical Laboratory Standardization [NCCLS] method. Azole group of drugs: Ketoconazole, Miconazole, and itraconazole showed excellent activity against yeasts and Aspergillus Spp. as 92-100% of strains are susceptible. 75% of Fusarium Spp. are also susceptible to itraconazole. 5-FIuorocytosin, on the other hand, showed poor activity against molds but active against Candida. Amphotericin-B showed variable activities but its high toxicity remains as a limiting factor

ABSTRACT

We performed epikeratophakia for the correction of aphakia on 17 eyes; in children who had congenital and traumatic cataracts. Keratometry and visual results are evaluated. Advantages of epikeratophakia include the placement of most of the correction directly on the eye in a permanent attachment and the elimination of contact lens manipulation in uncooperative patients, so that more time and energy can be devoted to the occlusion therapy
