ABSTRACT

This study included 49 diabetic children [age 3-15 years] and 26 sex and age matched healthy control ones. Both diabetic and control children were subjected to history, physical examination and laboratory investigations. In order to elucidate the role of diabetes mellitus on calcium homeostasis, the serum and urinary levels of minerals were measured. Also, the serum levels of calcium, phosphorus, creatinine, fasting blood glucose and postprandial blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, alkaline phosphatase and parathyroid hormone were determined and 24-hour urine was collected for the calculation and determination of the calcium level, phosphorus and creatinine. The findings of this study suggested that hyper calciuria in association with a secondary hyperparathyroidism and a high level of alkaline phosphatase was observed during poor blood glucose control and may be considered as one of the factors leading to reduced bone mass [osteopenia] in diabetes mellitus
