ABSTRACT

Congenital anatomical anomalies of the external ear are birth defects that may arise on their own with varying combinations and severity, or in association with other defects as part of a syndrome. The main types are: microtia, which includes a wide variety of auricular malformations, and external auditory canal stenosis or atresia. The new-born with bilateral atresia is immediately recognized as having immediately recognized as having a server congenital deafness which will limit acquisition of speech and language development throughout infancy and will affect his whole education. Review of external ear anatomy, embryology, and types of dysplasia and their clinical presentations are presented. The variables governing the management of affected individuals are discussed
