ABSTRACT

An immunoperoxidase method has been used to demonstrate human chorionic gonadotrophin [HCG] in placental site trophoblastic tumours, hydatiform moles, and choriocarcinomas. In addition to cytotrophoblast, and syncytiotrophoblast, a third form of trophoblast designated intermediate trophoblast is present during pregnancy and in trophoblastic disease. Intermediate trophoblast has distinctive immunocytochemical features that distinguish it from cytotrophoblast and syncytiotrophoblast. The localization of HCG in both intermediate trophoblast and syncytiotrophblast varies with the type of trophoblastic neoplasm, and from one specimen to another within each category of tumour. Syncytiotrophoblast may contain HCG in large amount, whereas intermediate trophoblast contains HCG focally. Cytotrophoblast is devoid of HCG except in choriocarcinoms, which may show focal weak staining for HCG, Immunoperoxidase identification of HCG has proved helpful in clarifying the histogensis of trophoblastic neoplasms and may also be of value in establishing their diagnosis and in determining their prognosis

ABSTRACT

The clinical histopathological and histochemical features of ten patients with prolymphocytic leukemia were reviewed. Seven of the patients had clinical evidence of massive splenomegaly at the time of the diagnosis. None of the patients had significant lymph nodes enlargement. The initial leucocyte count was elevated in all patients and was greater than 100 * 10[9]/1 in eight of them. The absolute prolymphocyte count range from 18.4 to 395.3 * 10[9]/1 and was greater than 100 * 10[9]/1 in eight patients

ABSTRACT

A total of 402 cases of endoscopic gastric biopsies were carried out at the Basrah Teaching Hospital. The specimens were remined microscopically for histological diagnosis and to determine the variants of intestinal metaplasia and their significance to various gastric lesions biopsied. Three types of intestinal metaplasia were identified: Type I [Complete Intestinal Metaplasia], Type II [Incomplete Intestinal Metaplasia] and Type III [Incomplete Intestinal Metaplasia with Hyperplastic Epithelium]. Type III intestinal metaplasia was a more significant associated with cases of gastric dysplasia and carcinoma than with those of benign gastric lesions. But no such association was found with either type I or type II intestinal metaplasia. The significance of the different type of entestinal metaplasia in relation to various gastric lesios is discussed

ABSTRACT

Twenty nine ovarian tumours with argyophilia were tested immunohistochemically for reactivity with monoclonal antibody HNK-1, which detects normal and neoplastic cell derived from the neuroectodermal and amin precursor-uptake and decarboxylation [APUD] systems. The tumours include 12 mucinous tumours [five benign, three borderline and four malignant], five endometroid carcinoma, three mesonephroid carcinoma, four Brenner tumours, two androbla-tomas and three carcinoid tumours. HNK-1 reactive cells were found in almost every type of ovarian tumours. It is concluded that some ovarian tumours with argyrophilia are related to APUDomas
