ABSTRACT

A total of 80 subjects were divided into two groups. Groups A included 20 normal healthy control subjects and group B included 60 subjects with endogenous depression Anti-TPO antibodies were performed by commercially available kits. Results were analysed by using students T test and level of significance was done. Anti-TPO antibodies were significantly raised in patients with endogenous depression

ABSTRACT

The increased level of LDL-c in the serum has a high risk and the increased serum HDL-c level has a low risk for the development of atherosclerosis. The effect of Nigella Sativa on levels of cholesterol fractions were determined in this study on rats. 24 albino rats of 08 weeks age having equal number of males and females were kept at optimum atmospheric condition. The blood samples were taken at the start and different control and experimental diets were given for 24 weeks. The experimental diets were added with Nigella Sativa as 30 mg/kg body weight. The blood samples were taken at the end of study. The blood samples drawn at the start and end of the study were estimated for serum cholesterol. The results of control and experimental groups were compared. Total serum cholesterol in the control group showed increase from 8.3 +/- 3.30 to 13.96 +/- 9.3 at 24 weeks. The serum HDL cholesterol showed increase from 44.4 +/- 6.12 to 80.45 +/- 5.95 level at 24 weeks. The serum LDL cholesterol showed increase from 8.3 +/- 3.30 to 13.96 +/- 9.3 at 24 weeks. The total serum cholesterol in experimental group was increased from 76.9 +/- 6.5 to 117.5 +/- 6.65 at 24 weeks. The serum HDL cholesterol levels was increased from 41.7 +/- 4.9 to 83.42 +/- 5.92 at 24 weeks as compared with control group. The LDL cholesterol levels were decreased from 12.7 +/- 6.9 to 8.5 +/- 7.8 at 24 weeks. This study shows significant decrease in serum low density lipoprotein cholesterol level, and increase in serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels

ABSTRACT

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia [GN] can present as an orofacial pain syndrome in which there are repeated episodes of intractable pain in the tongue, throat, tonsils and ears. Primary GN is idiopathic, whereas secondary GN has some identifiable cause like tumor invasion that leads to constant irritation of the nerve. Current therapies include pharmacological management, nerve blocks, decompression surgery, and neuromodulation by either medications or pulsed mode radiofrequency. Radiofrequency lesioning of the glossopharyngeal nerve is a minimally invasive technique, which can effectively manage the pain in such patients. Here, we report a case in which secondary GN due to invasive tongue tumor, unresponsive to pulsed mode radiofrequency treatment, was treated with radiofrequency thermocoagulation [RFT]

ABSTRACT

To know the prevalence of hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV. Observational cross sectional study. Blood Transfusion Center Tehsil Headquarter Hospital Liaquetpur. The data of blood donors from 2001 to 2003. Total blood donors studied were 1426. The prevalence for hepatitis B was 5.96% [CL 4.84%-7.32%] It was 0.07% [CL <0.01% - 0.44%] for HCV and zero for HIV. The prevalence of HBV in males was 6.03% [CL 4.87%-7.45%] while 5.05% [CL 1.91%-11.63%] in females [p=0.6917]. The prevalence in 17-20 years age group was 6.4% [CL 3.92%-10.23%], 5.81% [CL 4.6%-7.33%] in 21-40 years age group and in 41-60 years age group it was 4.35% [CL 1.33%-28.19%] [p=0.9029]. Hepatitis B is common, hepatitis C is an uncommon health problem while HIV is not present in this area

ABSTRACT

Background: Unsaturated fatty acids in diet have lipid lowering effect. Canola oil is frequently being used in the diet. Present study aims at experimental assessment of its lipid lower effect

Methods: Sixty albino rats of eight weeks age with average weight of 150-200 gm each were selected. The rats were divided five groups, on the basis of different diets. Group A animals were fed on synthetic diet while group B animals were fed on diet containing 2.9% canola oil. Group C animals were fed on diet containing 2. 9% canola oil and atherogenic element. Group D animals were fed on diet containing 20 percent canola oil while Group E animals were fed on diet containing 20 percent canola oil and atherogenic element. Tissue lipid profile of albino rats was done

Results: Hepatic, omental and adrenal total lipids, triglycerides and total cholesterol were higher in groups taking Canola oil and atherogenic diet in comparison with groups taking canola oil only

Conclusion: Use of canola oil diet has lipid lowering effect

ABSTRACT

This prospective study was done to evaluate the serum levels of Microsomal and Thyroglobulin autoantibodies in patients with toxic diffuse goiter and nodular goitre [non-toxic] undergoing radio-iodine therapy and thyroidectomy respectively. Forty eight patients suffering from thyroid disorders, 29 with nodular goiter and 19 with toxic diffuse goitre [TDG] and 15 age and sex-matched normal controls were studied. Thyroid microsomal [MSAb] and thyroglobulin autoantibodies [TGAb] were estimated in the sera of all the subjects using the commercially available kits based on tanned red cell hemaglutination technique. MSAb seropositivity in TDG and nodular goitre was found to be 78.9% and 51.7% respectively. On the other hand, TGAb seropositivity was 57.9% and 27.6% in cases of TDG and nodular goitre. 13.3% and 6.7% of the normal controls were positive for MSAb and TGAb respectively. These findings indicate that autoimmunity is implicated in the genesis of commonly occurring thyroid disorders

ABSTRACT

To assess AST/ALT ratio in patients with liver disease, i.e. hepatitis and cirrhosis and to evaluate its significance as predictor of cirrhosis in our population. Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out in the Department of Medicine and Gastroentero logy Medical Unit-I Post Graduate Medical Institute/Services Hospital, Lahore and Department of Pathology PGMI Lahore Pakistan. The period of study was from July 1999 to July 2000. Subject and This study comprised 75 patients suffering from liver disease. All the patients were thoroughly examined clinically and ultrasound was performed. They were divided into two groups; Group I: It included 50 [35 male, 15 female] patients with cirrhosis of the liver confirmed clinically and by ultrasonography. Group II: It comprised of 25 [18 male, 7 female] patients with acute hepatitis confirmed by serology. The blood sample were sent to department of pathology Postgraduate Medical Institutes Lahore. HBs Ag and anti-HCV were performed using the commercially available kits based on ELISA techniques. AST and ALT were determined using the kits based on photometric methods in which the Oxo-acids are assayed by coupling with 2-4 dinitrophenyl hydrazine. The mean AST and ALT concentrations of the patients with hepatitis [Group II] were elevated significantly [P<0.001] as compared to those of the cirrhotic patients [Group I]. In contrast, the mean AST/ALT ratios of the cirrhotic patients [Group I] were elevated significantly [P<0.001] than the patients with hepatitis. Conclusions: The present study shows that the mean AST/ALT ratios of the cirrhotic patients were significantly higher [P < 0.001] as compared to those with hepatitis. Hence, the AST/ALT ratio can be considered as a dependable marker of fibrosis in patients with chronic liver disease in Pakistan, even though liver biopsy remains the most definitive diagnostic measure for cirrhosis
