ABSTRACT

Placenta accreta is a rare obstetrical condition that mainly occurs in the third trimester leading to life-threatening complications. Hereby, a case of uterine rupture due to placenta accreta occuring in the second trimester is presented. A forty-year old patient who conceived after in vitro fertilization treatment [oocyte donation and embryo transfer] presented in emergency department in the nineteen weeks of gestation with acute abdominal pain, heamoperitoneum and fetal death. Emergency laprotomy showed uterine rupture along with placenta accreta for which the patient underwent subtotal hysterectomy. Although, an uncommon occurrence, physicians in assisted reproductive techniques [ART] clinics should consider placenta accreta in gravid patients who present with acute abdominal pain and shock, considering the fact that they usually have associated high risk factors for abnormal placentation

ABSTRACT

“The two big problems – the nature of development and the nature of the mind – are being subdued. I don’t know whether there will be beautiful, general theories to come out of this – something really nice like Watson and Crick’s double helix – or whether there will be an accumulation of more and more details. I’ll confess to a secret hope for the former” (Crow 2000).

ABSTRACT

While most men prefer women as their sexual partners, some are bisexual and others are homosexuals. It has been debated for a long time whether a person's sexual preference is innate, learned, or due to a combination of both causes. It was recently discovered that the human right-versus-left-hand use preference and the direction of scalp hair-whorl rotation develop from a common genetic mechanism. Such a mechanism controls functional specialization of brain hemispheres. Whether the same mechanism specifying mental makeup influences sexual preference was determined here by comparing hair-whorl rotation in groups enriched with homosexual men with that in males at large. Only a minority of 8.2% (n = 207) unselected 'control' group of males had counterclockwise rotation. In contrast, all three samples enriched with homosexual men exhibited highly significant (P < 0.0001), 3.6-fold excess (29.8%, n = 272) counterclockwise rotation. These results suggest that sexual preference may be influenced in a significant proportion of homosexual men by a biological/genetic factor that also controls direction of hair-whorl rotation.

ABSTRACT

The association of celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease has not been described in females of South Asian descent. We report three women, aged 33, 43 and 46 years, of South Asian origin, with both ulcerative colitis and celiac disease.
