ABSTRACT

This study investigated the efficacy of using a diary to record daily routines, combined with guidance on healthy lifestyle (GHL) by a physical educator, on promoting changes in health parameters in children. Sixty-three children (10 ± 0.8 years) were allocated to one of the three following groups: a control group (CON, n = 18); a group that did not use the diary, but received GHL (G, n = 23); or a group that both used the diary and received GHL (DG, n = 22). Blood pressure, body composition, physical fitness tests (PF), physical activity levels (PAL), and dietary intake profiles were assessed in children and their parents before and after 2 months of intervention. The DG group improved their performance in PF, increased PAL, and reduced body fat (p < 0.05). Additionally, 56% of families from both DG and G reduced their consumption of unhealthy foods and 70,6% increased their consumption of healthy foods. Overall, it was concluded that 2 months of using a diary to record daily routines combined with GHL by a physical educator improved PAL, PF, body composition, and dietary intake profiles of children and their families

ABSTRACT

Activity, physical fitness and anthropometric level in childhood has been linked with cardiovascular diseases in adulthood. These parameters are little studied in the northeast, and more specifically in Piauí. Therefore, the aim of study was measurement the physical activity and cardiovascular risk levels in schoolchildren with the ages ranging from 8 to 10 years old in the city of Teresina-PI. The study included 307 schoolchildren of both sexes, aged between 08 and 10 years, unrolled in the municipal school of Teresina-PI. The subjects answered a questionnaire in order to identify the physical activity level (NAF) of the students and were submitted to an assessment of body mass, height, body mass index and physical fitness and blood pressure. Boys and girls from eight to 10 years old the city of Teresina-PI did not differ in relation to anthropometric, cardiovascular and NAF parameters. But the intra-group comparisons of anthropometric measurements, point out that the age of eight differs from nine and 10 years old. Furthermore, the VO2máx declines from the age of eight in both gender. From eight years old onwards, children from Teresina-PI, have reduced physical fitness and changes in anthropometric parameters. This information is important for the Physical Education Regional to take measures for preventing cardiovascular diseases, once these parameters are directly related with adulthood diseases.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate lifestyle and health related physical fitness levels in high school students between 14 to 19 years of a public school in the city if Demerval Lobão - PI. The sample was 74 adolescents (48 boys and 26 girls) aged 16.72±1.28 years. Tests of seat and reach to evaluate the flexibility, abdominal strength/endurance and ground arm flexion to exhaustion were performed. Body fat percentage (%BF) was determined by the protocol of Lohman . Health related lifestyle was determined by the questionnaire Profile of Lifestyle – PEVI. From the evaluated adolescents, 71.62% presented a regular health related lifestyle. Regarding the body mass index and %BF, 10.8% and 16.2% were overweight, respectively. The girls presented inferior results for the abdominal endurance and ground arm flexion as compared with the boys, while boys were inferior to girls for flexibility. It was concluded that adolescents present a regular lifestyle and the most part of the scholars is in the healthy zone. With exception to flexibility in boys, all evaluated components reduced as adiposity increased.
