La Pielonefritis por Escherichia coli con frecuencia es de diagnóstico confuso haciéndose necesario combinar pruebas de urología con las de imagenologías, pudiendo generar complicaciones renales hasta poder convertiste en un caso hepático grave por las lesiones que se les infrinja a los riñones, es por ello que esta investigación se planteo como objetivo caracterizar los casos de Pielonefritis por E. coli en el Hospital Naval de Guayaquil. Estudio descriptivo de corte transversal, con una muestra de 33 pacientes. Empleando como técnica de recolección de datos sus historias clínicas, pruebas de sedimento urinario, urocultivo en medio aerobico y pruebas de imagenología. Teniendo como resultado que el sexo femenino (60,61%; n=20/33), con un 60,61% (n=20/33) evidencian diabettus milletus, con grado de inducción primaria 24,24% (n=8/33), presentando dolor lumbar (100% n=33/33), con dolor al orinar y nauseas (90,91%; n=30/33), en los exámenes de urología las colonias/ml valores>105 fue de 57,58% (n=19/33) con E. coli (100%; n=33/33) y las pruebas de imagenología arrojaron que un 60,61% (n=20) evidencia gas en el colector solo sistema, confirmando el diagnóstico pielonefritis. En conclusión, por lo solapado que tiende a ser el diagnostico del Pielonefritis por E. coli deben combinarse las pruebas de urología y las de imágenes(AU)


Pyelonephritis by Escherichia coli is often of confused diagnosis making it necessary to combine urology tests with imaging, may cause renal complications until you can become a serious liver case due to injuries to the kidneys, That is why this research was aimed at characterizing the cases of Pyelonephritis by E. coli in the Naval Hospital of Guayaquil. Descriptive cross-sectional study, with a sample of 33 patients. Using as a data collection technique their clinical histories, urine sediment tests, uroculture in an aerobic environment and imaging tests. As a result, the female sex (60,61%; n=20/33), with 60.61% (n=20/33) showed diabettus milletus, with degree of primary induction 24.24% (n=8/33), presenting lumbar pain (100% n=33/33), with pain when urinating and nausea (90.91%; n=30/33), in urology examinations the colonies/ml values>105 was 57.58% (n=19/33) with E. coli (100%; n=33/33) and imaging tests showed that 60,61% (n=20) gas in the collector only system, confirming the diagnosis pyelonephritis. In conclusion, because of the overlapping that tends to be the diagnosis of Pyelonephritis by E. coli, urology and imaging tests should be combined(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the degree of knowledge of the patients enrolled in the Unified Health System of the Medicine School of ABC (Faculdade de Medicina do ABC) regarding the proper use and disposal of medicaments. Methods: Participants were recruited for convenience, during their medical appointments at the clinic of the Medical School of ABC (Santo André, Sao Paulo, Brazil) in the period from 04 August to 30 September 2014. Data collection was conducted through a self-administered poll designed specifically for the purpose of this study, which consisted of 25 questions multiple choice about socioeconomic issues and the subject disposal of drugs, consumption and environmental pollution. Results: We selected the 140 patients’ polls. Most of them is of white ethnicity (58%) and female (58%). Level of education: 31% have completed secondary education (31%) or incomplete graduation (19%). Most of the participants (76%) buy drugs without a prescription, and most families (76%) seek understanding by reading the labels. 71.43% reported knowing that incorrect disposal of drugs could contaminate the environment, but 78% reported never having seen or received information about these. After using, 22.15% maintains the medication at home for future use, 55% of subjects reported improper disposal sites and 13% are delivered in health care institutions. Conclusion: Our study has showed that most participants inappropriately use and dispose of drugs, even though they know they can contaminate the environment.

ABSTRACT

Objetivou-se estudar o efeito do ômega 3 e da vitamina B12 no espermograma, na histomorfometria dos órgãos reprodutivos e na temperaturas do corpo com termografia infravermelha em ratos Wistar. Utilizaram-se 16 ratos, em quatro grupos (n=4), que receberam injeções diárias por 30 dias, sendo: grupo controle - solução salina; grupo ômega 3 - óleo de peixe 1g/kg; grupo B12 - vitamina B12 3µg; e grupo ômega 3 + B12 - óleo de peixe 1g/kg e vitamina B12 3µg. Imagens termográficas de áreas do corpo foram obtidas. No 30º dia, os ratos foram sacrificados e realizaram-se as análises de morfologia espermática e histomorfometria. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e ao teste de Tukey a 5%. A temperatura da superfície do escroto foi superior no grupo B12 (P<0,05). Não houve diferenças entre grupos (P>0,05) para temperaturas do globo ocular. Houve correlação entre temperatura da superfície do escroto e porcentagem de gota citoplasmática distal (P=0,678). A elevação da temperatura do escroto resulta no aumento da porcentagem de gotas citoplasmáticas distais. A temperatura do globo ocular não sofre influência significativa do ômega 3 e da vitamina B12. O ômega 3 reduz o epitélio seminífero, e a vitamina B12 minimiza esse efeito.(AU)


The objective of this study was to study the effect of Omega 3 and vitamin B12 on spermogram, histomorphometry of reproductive organs and body temperature with infrared thermography in Wistar rats. Sixteen rats were used in four groups (n= 4) who received daily injections for 30 days. Control Group - saline solution; Group Omega 3 - fish oil 1g/kg; Group B12 - vitamin B12 3μg and Group Omega 3 + B12 - fish oil 1g/kg and vitamin B12 3μg. Thermographic images of body were obtained. On the 30th day the rats were sacrificed and analyzes of sperm morphology and histomorphometry were performed. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey's test at 5%. The surface temperature of the scrotum was higher in group B12 (P< 0.05). There were no differences between groups (P> 0.05) for eyeball temperatures. There was a correlation between scrotal temperature and distal cytoplasmic droplet (P= 0.678). Elevation of scrotum temperature results in an increase in the percentage of distal cytoplasmic droplets. The temperature of the eyeball is not significantly influenced by Omega 3 and vitamin B12. Omega 3 reduces the seminiferous epithelium and vitamin B12 minimizes this effect.(AU)

ABSTRACT

In this work, lemon and onion biomasses commonly found in street markets are for the first time used to develop a facile, fast and low-cost one-step microwave-assisted carbonization method for synthesis of highly fluorescent carbon dots (CDs). The structure and optical properties of CDs were investigated by TEM, XRD, XRF, UV-Vis, FTIR, and fluorescence spectroscopy. CDs displayed satisfactory optical pro-prieties, a high quantum yield of 23.6%, and excellent water solubility, and the particle size was 4.23-8.22 nm with an average diameter of 6.15 nm. An efficient fluorescent resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the CDs and riboflavin was achieved with CDs acting as donor and riboflavin as acceptor. A linear relationship between FRET and the riboflavin concentration from 0.10 to 3.0 μg/mL was observed, allowing the development of an accurate and fast analytical method to determine this vitamin in multivitamin/mineral supplements. Despite the potential interferences in these supplements, CDs were selective for riboflavin under optimized conditions. A paired t-test at a 95% confidence level indicated no statistically significant difference between the proposed and the reference methods. Recovery test presented values ranged from 96.0% to 101.4%. The limit of detection and relative standard deviation were estimated at 1.0 ng/mL and <2.6% (n = 3), respectively. CDs were successfully synthesized in a domestic microwave oven (1450 W, 6 min), presenting satisfactory parameters when compared with results of other studies reported in the literature, suggesting that the proposed method is a potentially useful method for the synthesis of CDs and determination of riboflavin.

ABSTRACT

RESUMO O uso de plantas medicinais no tratamento de doenças é uma estratégia antiga utilizada por praticamente todas as populações do mundo, e, embora novos antibióticos tenham sido desenvolvidos para o controle de micro-organismos infecciosos, às vezes são ineficazes. Diversos extratos de plantas medicinais têm efeitos antimicrobianos, principalmente quando associados à antibióticos de uso clínico, representando alternativa terapêutica para doenças infecciosas. Montrichardia linifera, conhecida popularmente como aninga, é espécie macrófita, aquática emergente de hábito herbáceo, pertencente a família Araceae e ocorre em áreas alagáveis. A utilidade farmacológica desta espécie é diversificada tendo sido relatada como cicatrizante, antirreumático, antidiurético e expectorante. Devido à relevância no campo etnofarmacológico, ampla utilização na medicina popular e escassez de trabalhos relacionados à atividade antibacteriana desta espécie, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a atividade antibacteriana de extratos alcoólicos de folhas de Montrichardia linifera, coletadas na margem do rio Igaraçu, Parnaíba-PI. O extrato foi testado em oito cepas de bactérias: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae e Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Foram utilizadas as técnicas de verificação da formação de halos de inibição e determinação das concentrações inibitórias e bactericidas mínimas. Os testes antibacterianos evidenciaram como principais resultados que o extrato metanólico seco (EMS), extrato metanólico fresco (EMF), e o extrato etanólico seco (EES), apresentaram ação antibacteriana, enquanto o extrato etanólico fresco (EEF) não apresentou atividade para as bactérias testadas. O EMS foi o mais eficiente, inibindo o crescimento bacteriano na concentração de 200 μg/mL para E. faecalis, 400 μg/mL para S. aureus, 400 μg/mL para S. epidermidis e 2.000 μg/mL para P. aeruginosa. O EMF obteve CIM de 2.000 μg/mL para E. faecalis e EES obteve CIM de 250 μg/mL para E. faecalis. Os resultados demonstraram que M. linifera constitui fonte eficiente de compostos bioativos antibacterianos. Os estudos sobre as propriedades farmacológicas de plantas da família Araceae são escassos, e os resultados deste trabalho são pioneiros em relação a atividade antibacteriana desta espécie.


ABSTRACT For a long time, medicinal herbs have been used in the treatment of diseases by almost all populations in the world, and although new antibiotics have been developed for the control of infectious micro-organisms, they are sometimes ineffective. Many herbal extracts have antimicrobial effects and represent a potential alternative therapy for infectious diseases, especially when associated with the clinical use of antibiotics. The Montrichardia linifera, popularly known as Aninga, is a robust, herbaceous, emergent aquatic macrophyte belonging to the Araceae family, appearing along rivers and stream margins in the tropical America. The pharmacological application of this species are several ones, having been reported to own a healing, antirheumatic, anti-diuretic and expectorant effect. Due to the relevance in the ethnopharmacological field, the spread use in popular medicine and the few researches related to the antibacterial activity of this specie, the study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of alcoholic leaf extracts of plants of Montrichardia linifera collected along the margins of Rio Igaraçu, Parnaíba, Piauí, Brazil. The extract was tested in eight strains of ATCC bacterial standards: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The verification techniques used were the formation of inhibition halos, and the determination of minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations (MIC). The antibacterial tests showed, as main results, that dried methanol extract (EMS), fresh methanol extract (EMF) and dry ethanol extract (EES) exhibited antibacterial activity, while the fresh ethanol extract (EEF) was inactive against the tested bacteria. The EMS was the most efficient one, inhibiting bacterial growth at a concentration of 200 µg/mL for E. faecalis, 400 µg/mL for S. aureus 400 µg/mL for S. epidermidis and 2.000 µg/mL for P. aeruginosa. The EMF obtained a MIC of 2.000 µg/mL for E. faecalis and EES obtained a MIC of 250 µg/mL for E. faecalis. The results showed that M. linifera is an efficient source of bioactive antibacterial compounds. Studies about the pharmacological properties of plants of the family Araceae are scarce, and the results of this work are pioneer in regard to the antibacterial activity of this species.

ABSTRACT

Ginkgo biloba extract (GbE) has been indicated as an efficient medicine for the treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2. It remains unclear if its effects are due to an improvement of the insulin signaling cascade, especially in obese subjects. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of GbE on insulin tolerance, food intake, body adiposity, lipid profile, fasting insulin, and muscle levels of insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1), protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP-1B), and protein kinase B (Akt), as well as Akt phosphorylation, in diet-induced obese rats. Rats were fed with a high-fat diet (HFD) or a normal fat diet (NFD) for 8 weeks. After that, the HFD group was divided into two groups: rats gavaged with a saline vehicle (HFD+V), and rats gavaged with 500 mg/kg of GbE diluted in the saline vehicle (HFD+Gb). NFD rats were gavaged with the saline vehicle only. At the end of the treatment, the rats were anesthetized, insulin was injected into the portal vein, and after 90s, the gastrocnemius muscle was removed. The quantification of IRS-1, Akt, and Akt phosphorylation was performed using Western blotting. Serum levels of fasting insulin and glucose, triacylglycerols and total cholesterol, and LDL and HDL fractions were measured. An insulin tolerance test was also performed. Ingestion of a hyperlipidic diet promoted loss of insulin sensitivity and also resulted in a significant increase in body adiposity, plasma triacylglycerol, and glucose levels. In addition, GbE treatment significantly reduced food intake and body adiposity while it protected against hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia in diet-induced obesity rats. It also enhanced insulin sensitivity in comparison to HFD+V rats, while it restored insulin-induced Akt phosphorylation, increased IRS-1, and reduced PTP-1B levels in gastrocnemius muscle. The present findings suggest that G. biloba might be efficient in preventing and treating obesity-induced insulin signaling impairment.

ABSTRACT

Different levels of insulin sensitivity have been descrebed in several animal models of obesity as well as in humans. Monosodium glutamate (MSG)-obese mice were considered not be insulin resistant from data obtained in oral glucose tolerance tests. To reevaluate insulin resistance by the intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) and by the clamp technique, newborn male Wistar rats (N = 20) were injected 5 times, every other day, with 4 g/Kg MSG (N = 10) or saline (control; N = 10) during the first 10 days of age. At 3 months, the IVGTT was performed by injecting glucose (0.75 g/Kg) through the jugular vein into freely moving rats. During euglycemic clamping plasma insulin levels were increased by infusing 3 mU. Kg(-1). min (-1) of regular insulin until a steady-state plateau was achieved. The basal blood glucose concentration did not differ between the two experimental groups. After the glucose load, increased values of glycemia (p<0.001) in MSG-obese rats occurred at minute 4 and from minute 16 to minute 32. These results indicate impaired glucose tolerance. Basal plasm insulin levels were 39.9 + 4 muU/ml in control and 66.4 + 5.3 muU/ml in MSG-obese rats. The mean post-glucose area increase of insulin was 111 percent higher in MSG-obese than in control rats. When insulinemia was clamped, at 102 or 133 muU/ml in control and MSG rats, respectively, the corresponding glucose infusion rate necessary to maintain euglycemia was 17.3 + 0.8 mg. kg (-1). min(-1) for control rats while 2.1 + 0.3 mg. kg(-1). min(-1) was sufficient for MSG-obese rats. The 2-h integrated area for total glucose metabolized, in mg. min. dl(-1), was 13.7 + 2.3 vs 3.3 + 0.5 for control and MSG rats, respectively. These data demonstrate that MSG-obese rats develop insulin resistance to peripheral glucose uptake.

ABSTRACT

Estudou-se o efeito da adubaçäo fosfatada no estabelecimento do capim Andropogon (Andropogon gayanus, Kunth), em solo de cerrado latossolo vermelho amarelado de acidez elevada e baixo teor de fósforo, ao qual foram incorporados, por ocasiäo da semeadura, superfosfato simples e/ou fosfato de Araxá, de acordo com os seguintes tratamentos: A - controle; B - fosfato de Araxá l - t/ha; C - superfosfato simples - 0,5 t/ha + calagem; D - fosfato de Araxá - 0,5 t/ha + superfosfato simples, 0,25 t/ha + calagem; E - fosfato de Araxá -0,5 t/ha + superfosfato simples - 0,25 t/ha. O delineamento experimental foi o de parcelas subdivididas com cinco repetiçöes. O capim era colhido todas as vezes que atingia altura entre 0,60 - 0,70 cm. Foram realizados sete cortes. O efeito das adubaçöes fosfatadas e da calagem sobre a produçäo de matéria seca foi de curta duraçäo, näo passando do segundo corte, evidenciando a existência da interaçäo tratamento x corte. O teor de proteína bruta variou apenas em funçäo da data de corte. Os teores de cálcio apresentaram variaçöes relacionadas ao rendimento de matéria seca, sendo mais baixo nas produçöes mais elevadas. O superfosfato simples e o fosfato de rocha aplicados isoladamente ou combinados näo exerceram nenhuma influência nos teores de fósforo na gramínea, que se alteraram apenas com os cortes e foram baixos, não ultrapassando de 0,10 por cento

Os autores relatam o caso de um paciente do sexo masculino de 60 anos de idade, assintomático respiratório, não tabagista, cuja radiografia de tórax evidenciava a presença de um nódulo pulmonar localizado no segmento 10. Após complementação do estudo radiológico com tomografia convencional e arteriografia foi confirmado o diagnóstico de sequestro pulmonar. A seguir tecem comentários acerca do quadro clínico e radiológico desta afecção além de considerações sobre a patogenia e, finalmente, o tratamento proposto no caso

Os autores relatam o caso de um paciente de 35 anos, pardo, pedreiro, portador de adenomas sebáceos na face diagnosticados por biópsia, com poucos sintomas respiratórios, cuja radiografia de tórax revelou infiltrado interticial de base e a prova funcional respiratória, padräo restritivo leve. A seguir, tecem comentários sobre a esclerose tuberosa em suas formas completa e incompleta e o envolvimento pulmonar nesta doença correlacionando com o quadro em questäo.

ABSTRACT

The effect of fasting was studied in lean an monosodium glutamate (MSG)-obese rats. Daily urinary urea excretion and body weitht loss were studied before and during 21 days of fasting. MSG-obese rats showed reduced weight loss, higher total liver lipid content, and lower urea exretion during fasting, thus suggesting a higher capacity to spare body protein in comparison to controls. A significant decrease in retroperitoneal fat pad content was observed in both groups after 6 days of fasting (83% in the controls vs 35% in MSG-obese rats). These data suggest that the larger lipid stores of MSG-obese rats can explain their greater mean survival time after fasting
