ABSTRACT

Abstract Scorpionic accidents are a major public health problem due to the high occurrence with potential seriousness. In this manner, the research aimed to analyze the occurrence of scorpionic accidents in a municipality in the northeastern of Brazil. An exploratory, descriptive study was made, with a quantitative approach, using secondary data which was gotten from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN), from 2008 to 2018. Data such as neighborhood, presence of street markets were also used, and the existence of sanitation and climatic data such as temperature and season. Geoprocessing was used to identify possible changes in the environment. In the analyzed period, 9,330 cases of scorpion accidents were recorded, with an average of 848 annual notifications. Scorpionic accidents occurred more frequently in women (5,686; 60.94%). Individuals aged 20 to 29 years (1.727; 18.51%) were more frequent to scorpion stings. Regarding the body parts where the stings were made, the highlights were on the foot (3.515; 37.67%) followed by the hand (2.818; 30.20%). No statistically significant relation was observed between climatic factors and scorpionic accidents. However, the high number of cases of scorpionic accidents was observed in the last 11 years studied. It was evident that during the study period there was no statistical relationship when climatic factors were correlated to scorpionic accidents. On its turn, when it was verified the results of the geoprocessing analysis, it was seen that anthropic factors have been motivating the potentiation of the occurrence of these accidents.

ABSTRACT

Early childhood obesity increases the risk of developing metabolic diseases. We examined the early introduction of exercise in small-litter obese-induced rats (SL) on glucose metabolism in the epididymal adipose tissue (AT) and soleus muscle (SM). On day 3 post-birth, pups were divided into groups of ten or three (SL). On day 22, rats were split into sedentary (S and SLS) and exercise (E and SLE) groups. The rats swam three times/week carrying a load for 30 min. In the first week, they swam without a load; in the 2nd week, they carried a load equivalent to 2% of their body weight; from the 3rd week to the final week, they carried a 5% body load. At 85 days of age, an insulin tolerance test was performed in some rats. At 90 days of age, rats were killed, and blood was harvested for plasma glucose, cholesterol, and triacylglycerol measurements. Mesenteric, epididymal, retroperitoneal, and brown adipose tissues were removed and weighed. SM and AT were incubated in the Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate buffer, 5.5 mM glucose for 1 h with or without 10 mU/mL insulin. Comparison between the groups was performed by 3-way ANOVA followed by the Tukey post-hoc test. Sedentary, overfed rats had greater body mass, more visceral fat, lower lactate production, and insulin resistance. Early introduction of exercise reduced plasma cholesterol and contained the deposition of white adipose tissue and insulin resistance. In conclusion, the early introduction of exercise prevents the effects of obesity on glucose metabolism in adulthood in this rat model.

ABSTRACT

This article presents a reflection on the past and current history, uses, and significance of the Luiz Rau creek to the municipality of Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul. Its waters have always been important to the region, quenching the thirst of the local population and their livestock and providing venues for shared social interactions, but also as a destination for municipal industrial and household waste, which has polluted the waters of the creek. Our primary objective is to present and discuss these aspects with the purpose of elucidating the historical importance of this watercourse to the city of Novo Hamburgo. Toward that end, we conducted an exploratory survey to obtain the necessary inputs for such a discussion. We also employed texts from the now-defunct Jornal 5 de Abril and from Jornal NH, the highest-circulating newspaper in the region, to illustrate some situations experienced by the community. We found that municipal waste continues to be dumped into the creek, which has made it rather unloved by the local residents, but it remains firmly present in their daily lives.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

In the West, the consumption of medicinal plants is increasing strongly, and up to 40% of the population use medicinal plants and phytotherapic preparations regularly, in the belief that they are innocuous and/or safe. However, in most cases there is no scientific proof of their pharmacological and toxicological properties. The aim of this study was to carry out a bibliographical review of the toxicological properties of Casearia sylvestris Swartz and collect data providing a basis for its rational use. Some studies validate classical therapeutic indications of C. sylvestris, such as to treat diarrhea and snakebites, justifying its empirical use. Nevertheless, there are few reports about its toxicological properties and these present only limited findings, describing results as 50% lethal dose (LD50) and the acute toxicity of its constituents. Currently, research is insufficient to ensure safety of popular preparations based on C. sylvestris. Therefore, it is necessary to make a fuller assessment of its deleterious profile, especially with respect to the toxic potential of its constituents, as well as its capacity to harm target organs and organic systems...

ABSTRACT

Prenatal immune challenge (PIC) in pregnant rodents produces offspring with abnormalities in behavior, histology, and gene expression that are reminiscent of schizophrenia and autism. Based on this, the goal of this article was to review the main contributions of PIC models, especially the one using the viral-mimetic particle polyriboinosinic-polyribocytidylic acid (poly-I:C), to the understanding of the etiology, biological basis and treatment of schizophrenia. This systematic review consisted of a search of available web databases (PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, PsycINFO, and ISI Web of Knowledge) for original studies published in the last 10 years (May 2001 to October 2011) concerning animal models of PIC, focusing on those using poly-I:C. The results showed that the PIC model with poly-I:C is able to mimic the prodrome and both the positive and negative/cognitive dimensions of schizophrenia, depending on the specific gestation time window of the immune challenge. The model resembles the neurobiology and etiology of schizophrenia and has good predictive value. In conclusion, this model is a robust tool for the identification of novel molecular targets during prenatal life, adolescence and adulthood that might contribute to the development of preventive and/or treatment strategies (targeting specific symptoms, i.e., positive or negative/cognitive) for this devastating mental disorder, also presenting biosafety as compared to viral infection models. One limitation of this model is the incapacity to model the full spectrum of immune responses normally induced by viral exposure.

ABSTRACT

The loss of brain volume has been used as a marker of tissue destruction and can be used as an index of the progression of neurodegenerative diseases, such as multiple sclerosis. In the present study, we tested a new method for tissue segmentation based on pixel intensity threshold using generalized Tsallis entropy to determine a statistical segmentation parameter for each single class of brain tissue. We compared the performance of this method using a range of different q parameters and found a different optimal q parameter for white matter, gray matter, and cerebrospinal fluid. Our results support the conclusion that the differences in structural correlations and scale invariant similarities present in each tissue class can be accessed by generalized Tsallis entropy, obtaining the intensity limits for these tissue class separations. In order to test this method, we used it for analysis of brain magnetic resonance images of 43 patients and 10 healthy controls matched for gender and age. The values found for the entropic q index were 0.2 for cerebrospinal fluid, 0.1 for white matter and 1.5 for gray matter. With this algorithm, we could detect an annual loss of 0.98 percent for the patients, in agreement with literature data. Thus, we can conclude that the entropy of Tsallis adds advantages to the process of automatic target segmentation of tissue classes, which had not been demonstrated previously.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to determine whether specific subgroups of schizophrenic patients, grouped according to electrodermal characteristics, show differences in the N-acetylaspartate/creatine plus choline (NAA / (Cr + Cho)) ratios in the frontal, cingulate and perirolandic cortices. Skin conductance levels (SCL) and skin conductance responses to auditory stimulation were measured in 38 patients with schizophrenia and in the same number of matched healthy volunteers (control). All subjects were submitted to multivoxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging. When compared to the control group, patients presented significantly lower NAA / (Cr + Cho) ratios in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (schizophrenia = 0.95 ± 0.03; control = 1.12 ± 0.04) and in the right (schizophrenia = 0.88 ± 0.02; control = 0.94 ± 0.03) and left (schizophrenia = 0.84 ± 0.03; control = 0.94 ± 0.03) cingulates. These ratios did not differ between electrodermally responsive and non-responsive patients. When patients were divided into two groups: lower SCL (less than the mean SCL of the control group minus two standard deviations) and normal SCL (similar to the control group), the subgroup with a lower level of SCL showed a lower NAA / (Cr + Cho) ratio in the left cingulate (0.78 ± 0.05) than the controls (0.95 ± 0.02, P < 0.05) and the subgroup with normal SCL (0.88 ± 0.03, P < 0.05). There was a negative correlation between the NAA / (Cr + Cho) ratio in the left cingulate of patients with schizophrenia and the duration of the disease and years under medication. These data suggest the existence of a schizophrenic subgroup characterized by low SCL that could be a consequence of the lower neuronal viability observed in the left cingulate of these patients.

ABSTRACT

Local anesthetics (LA) belong to a class of pharmacological compounds that attenuate or eliminate pain by binding to the sodium channel of excitable membranes, blocking the influx of sodium ions and the propagation of the nerve impulse. S (-) bupivacaine (S(-)bvc) is a local anesthetic of amino-amide type, widely used in surgery and obstetrics for sustained peripheraland central nerve blockade. This article focuses on the characterization of an inclusion complex of S(-) bvc in2-hydroxypropyl- beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta -CD). Differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy andX-Ray diffraction analysis showed structural changes inthe complex. In preliminary toxicity studies, the cellviability tests revealed that the inclusion complex decreased the toxic effect (p smaller that 0.001) produced by S(-) bvc. These results suggest that the S(-) bvc:HP- beta-CD inclusion complex represents a promising agent for the treatment of regional pain.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Panic disorder is thought to involve dysfunction in the septohippocampal system, and the presence of a cavum septum pellucidum might indicate the aberrant development of this system. We compared the prevalence and size of cavum septum pellucidum in 21 patients with panic disorder and in 21 healthy controls by magnetic resonance imaging. The length of the cavum septum pellucidum was measured by counting the number of consecutive 1-mm coronal slices in which it appeared. A cavum septum pellucidum of >6 mm in length was rated as large. There was no significant difference in the proportion of patients (16 of 21 or 76.2 percent) and controls (18 of 21 or 85.7 percent) with a cavum septum pellucidum (P = 0.35, Fisher's exact test, one-tailed), and no members of either group had a large cavum septum pellucidum. The mean cavum septum pellucidum rating in the patient and control groups was 1.81 (SD = 1.50) and 2.09 (SD = 1.51), respectively. There were also no significant differences between groups when we analyzed cavum septum pellucidum ratings as a continuous variable (U = 196.5; P = 0.54). Across all subjects there was a trend towards a higher prevalence of cavum septum pellucidum in males (100 percent, 10 of 10) than females (75 percent, 24 of 32; P = 0.09, Fisher's exact test, one-tailed). Thus, we conclude that, while panic disorder may involve septo-hippocampal dysfunction, it is not associated with an increased prevalence or size of the cavum septum pellucidum.

ABSTRACT

Reported neuroimaging studies have shown functional and morphological changes of temporal lobe structures in panic patients, but only one used a volumetric method. The aim of the present study was to determine the volume of temporal lobe structures in patients with panic disorder, measured by magnetic resonance imaging. Eleven panic patients and eleven controls matched for age, sex, handedness, socioeconomic status and years of education participated in the study. The mean volume of the left temporal lobe of panic patients was 9 percent smaller than that of controls (t21 = 2.37, P = 0.028). In addition, there was a trend (P values between 0.05 and 0.10) to smaller volumes of the right temporal lobe (7 percent, t21 = 1.99, P = 0.06), right amygdala (8 percent, t21 = 1.83, P = 0.08), left amygdala (5 percent, t21 = 1.78, P = 0.09) and left hippocampus (9 percent, t21 = 1.93, P = 0.07) in panic patients compared to controls. There was a positive correlation between left hippocampal volume and duration of panic disorder (r = 0.67, P = 0.025), with recent cases showing more reduction than older cases. The present results show that panic patients have a decreased volume of the left temporal lobe and indicate the presence of volumetric abnormalities of temporal lobe structures

ABSTRACT

1. The effect of crotoxin on the action potential kinetics of frog (Rana catesbeiana; 60-80 g) skeletal muscle was studied using a modified Ringer solution containing 1.6 mM KCl. 2. Crotoxin affected the kinetics of the action potential in a dose-dependent manner (90 to 460 nM). At 230 nM, crotoxin prolonged the duration of the action potential (from 1.1 +/- 0.1 to 1.6 +/- 0.1 ms) and slowed the rates of depolarization (from 282.0 +/- 7.3 to 196.0 +/- 13.2 V/s) and repolarization (from -81.4 +/- 6.9 to -55.6 +/- 3.8 V/s), in a dose-dependent manner. Its phospholipase subunit (component B) was five times less effective. 3. No effect of crotoxin was observed in the presence of 2.5 mM KCl or when SrCl2 was substituted for CaCl2. Lowering the muscle temperature to 12 degrees C did not reduce the effect of crotoxin. 4. No effect on the passive membrane response to hyperpolarizing current pulses was observed, which implies no major effect on the membrane resistance and capacitance. 5. It is concluded that crotoxin reduces the Na+ current and slows down the repolarization mechanism. This effect is probably not dependent on the phospholipase A2 activity of crotoxin and is inhibited by the substitution of Sr2+ for Ca2+

ABSTRACT

We have studied the effects of crotoxin, the neurotoxin of the South American rattlesnake Crotalus durissus terrificus, ,on the release of acetylcholine and lactate dehydrogenase from rat brain cortical slices. Crotoxin enhances the release of [3H]-acetylcholine from cortical slices (control values 92.8 ñ 5.9 and 150.3 ñ 11.7 DPM/mg and crotoxin valuesw 199.1 ñ 7.0 and 336.0 ñ 26.0 DPM/mg at 60 and 120 min incubation, respectively) in parallel with the release of lactate dehydrogenase (control values 50.4 ñ 16.8 and 80.3 ñ 19.5 U/mg and crotoxin values 162.5 ñ 39.1 and 355.7 ñ 38.2 U/mg, at 120 min incubation, respectively). Both effects are markedly reduced when substituting Sr2+ for Ca2+ in the incubation medium. It is concluded that the phospholipase activity of crotoxin is responsible for the observed effects
