ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to characterize the effect of bovine hydroxyapatite particles (HA) on the early stages of bone repairing in a rat femur defect model. METHODS: A non-critical 2 mm diameter bone defect was made in both femurs of 25 male albino Wistar rats. The left femurs defects were filled with HA and the right femurs defects were just let to fill with blood. Five animals were sacrificed at the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th or 14th post-surgery day and bone tissue sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin for comparison of inflammatory response by light microscopy. Histomorphometrical analysis of the newly formed bone was evaluated at the three last periods, using independent t-student test to compare both groups at each period (a=0.05). RESULTS: Histological analyses showed same standard of bone repair on first and third day; however, from the fifth post-surgery day there was a higher deposit of collagen fibers surrounding the hydroxyapatite particles and a greater thickness of the opposite side periosteum. There was no significant histomorphometrical difference between groups at all periods. CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that hydroxyapatite does not accelerate the early-stage of bone repairing, despite of induction of a higher deposit of collagen fibers.

ABSTRACT

Several changes in the oral cavity due to chemotherapy can be observed and can lead to important systemic complications, increasing the time of the patient in hospital and the costs of the treatment as well as affect the quality of life of the patients. The aim of this study was to assess the oral manifestation in patients treated with chemoterapy according to sex, age and tumor type. Data was collected in an oncology hospital in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais State, from patients' records that were submitted to oncologic treatment. It was possible to verify that mucositis, associated or not to other type of lesions, was the most common lesion in both sex of all ages (15.5 percent). Xerostomia and other lesions, such as Candida infection and aphthous lesions, were also present. It is possible to improve the quality of life of the patient during and after anti-neoplastic therapies through a protocol of odontological assistance that includes changes of the oral environment previous to chemotherapy such as profilaxis, caries removal, treatment of periodontal and periapical lesions, oral hygiene instructions, diet orientation and laser therapy. It is very important the insertion of the dentist in the oncologic medical team for the early diagnosis of the oral manifestation and follow-up during treatment time.

ABSTRACT

Patients with Down syndrome may not be cooperative during dental treatment and, in cases of complex treatment, it is necessary to use oral or inhaled sedation and/or general anesthesia, which represent safe and efficient treatment resources. There are few reports about oral rehabilitation with dental implants in patients with Down syndrome in the literature. This paper presents the case of a patient with Down syndrome and moderate mental retardation who suffered avulsion of the maxillary left central incisor after a fall, and was treated by means of a single dental implant with immediate load carried out under general anesthesia. After 4 years of follow up, there has been improvement in the sleep obstructive apnea syndrome due to the use of a tongue crib adapted for providing esthetics and preserving the implant placed.

ABSTRACT

Development disturbance originate in the odonthogenesis and begin around the 40TH week. It might occur on both dentitions, being scarcer in the primary one. Several hypotheses are mentioned for etiology of the supernumerary teeth and, among them, that one about hyperactivity of the Dental Blade, what would cause increment in the quantity of dental elements. There are correlations among the alteration in the quantity of teeth and systemic diseases, several syndromes as: Cleidocranian Displasia, Gardner Syndrome and Labial and Palatal Fissures. The clinical case of a male patient, 8 years old, leukoderm, which upper deciduous central incisors never exfoliated. The clinical examination demonstrated the presence of two erupted deciduous supernumerary elements between the elements 52 and 53. The radiographic tests (orthopantomography and per apical R-X of the incisors region) indicated the presence of further two impacted permanent supernumerary elements in the pre-maxilla region. The treatment plan selected was therapy for space maintenance in the arch with surgical removal of the supernumerary elements and orthodontic motion. Multidisciplinary approach provided adequate diagnosis and treatment to the patient.
