ABSTRACT

KAP (Knowledge, Attitude and Practice) studies are highly focused evaluations to measure changes in response to a specific intervention, usually outreach, demonstration or education. This study was conducted to assess KAP of Disulfiram amongst relatives of patients suffering from alcohol use disorder. Relatives of 100 patients diagnosed as alcohol use disorder were interviewed using a self–designed semi structured proforma. Alcohol use was documented to ascertain the pattern and dependence. On asking if “Heard about disulfiram” 38 respondents stated yes whereas 62 said no.36% said that they have used disulfiram.32% reported good experience.35% showed improved quality of life and achieved abstinence from alcohol. The present study demonstrated poor knowledge among relatives, but good attitudes toward use of disulfiram. The results suggest the need to implement an intervention strategy that reflects specific local circumstances and plan activities that are suited to the population involved.

ABSTRACT

Formic acid is a commonly available compound, available commercially for the purpose of coagulating rubber. It is a highly corrosive agent. Consumption of this pungent liquid has resulted in dire consequences, based on the available literature. There have been a few reports of accidental/suicidal consumption of formic acid in the past. This is one such case report of an accidental poisoning with formic acid, with successful management and recovery.

ABSTRACT

Breast cancer is a commonly encountered cancer in women. Tamoxifen is a frequently used drug in breast cancer. It is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). It is used for both chemoprevention and for palliative care in these patients. Drug-induced thrombocytopenia is a common diagnosis these days. Moreover, this condition can be life threatening or even fatal. It can either be due to increased platelet destruction or reduced formation. Either way, early diagnosis followed by discontinuation of the offending agent is the key to successful management. Here, we present a rare case of tamoxifen-induced thrombocytopenia

ABSTRACT

Psychogenic purpura or Diamond-Gardner Syndrome Is associated with painful bruising and purpura following an auto-sensitization to red blood cells along with imminent psychological and psychosocial factors. Patients with this disorder may present to the dermatologist from where they may be referred to the psychiatrist. A history of psychological stress may be elicited in some cases and psychiatric comorbidity may be seen in others. The psychiatrist, dermatologist and haematologist may have to assess the patient together to reach a diagnosis after a thorough evaluation. The treatment of this condition often involves a team approach involving various medical specialties. We present a series of three cases of psy-chogenic purpura and review the relevant literature

ABSTRACT

Biochemical markers play an important role in the diagnosis of myocardial injuries and adopting a therapy that would improve clinical outcome. The earliest biomarkers, such as alanine aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase, have become redundant with the development of more sensitive and specific assays for latest cardiac markers. This development of assays for new marker proteins has contributed to a greater understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease spectrum of many myocardial diseases
