ABSTRACT

This study was aimed to see the frequency of polyzoospermia and teratozoospermia, among men with history of infertility, presenting at National Institute of Health, Islamabad. Seven hundred and ninety married men presenting with a complaint of infertility underwent their semen analysis. They were categorized on the basis of sperm count and morphology. The sperm count was performed by Neubauer haemocytometer, while morphology assessed after staining the slides as described by the WHO methodology. The 790 men were classified as having azoospermia [203], oligozoospermia [353], polyzoospermia [13] and normozoospermia [221]. While on the basis of morphology as teratozoospermia [37] and normozoospermia [550]. The frequency of polyzoospermia in our study was 1.65% and teratozoospermia 6.30%. The study highlights the importance of both qualitative and quantitative analysis of sperms i.e. count and morphology in order to accurately diagnose the causes of infertility. It shows low frequency of polyzoospermia and teratozoospermia in infertile men

ABSTRACT

To study the prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria [ASB] in pregnant women of local population in Karachi. Prospective, hospital based conducted during September 2001-March 2002. Basic Medical Sciences Institute, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center Karachi. Group A [study group] consisted of 290 pregnant women attending the OPD of Gynaecology and Obstetrics units for antenatal check up and Group B [control] consisted of 70 nonpregnant women of fertile age. Midstream urine was collected and aerobically incubated at 37°C on CLED agar. Growth of >1x10[5] CFU/mL was taken as significant bacteriuria. Gram-negative bacteria were identified by API 20-E and gram-positive by standard routine methods. The two groups were age matched [P value>0.05]. Prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria was 6.2% [18/290] in the study group and 2.85%[2/70] in control group. E. coli was the common uropathogen in both groups and Staph. saprophyticus the second common only in-group A. Prevalence of ASB remained statistically the same in pregnant and nonpregnant women [P value >0.05] by X[2] application. Prevalence of ASB before pregnancy continues during pregnancy, if not treated. Uropathogens remain the same. All pregnant women should be screened for ASB by culture

ABSTRACT

This study was conduct to know about the real and present situation in our set up where tetanus still remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality despite free availability of a safe and effective vaccine. The study was conducted in medical unit of DHQ teaching hospital D. I. Khan over a period of four years. A total of 150 cases of tetanus were studied with 120 patients being males and 30 females. Diagnosis of tetanus was based on clinical examination. The patients were given conventional therapy for tetanus and comparison was made with other studies. Among these 150 patients of tetanus, 29 [19.3%] patient died, 22 being males and 7 females. Mortality rate in adult patients with tetanus is lower than reported in most other studies

ABSTRACT

This Objective of this study was to see histologic typing of prostate cancer and its relation to patient's age, as no curative therapy exists for the advanced stages. This is a retrospective study of 50 patients suffering from prostatic adenocarcinoma and admitted at Basic Medical Sciences Institute, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center Karachi. A total of fifty patients between ages of 50-80 years diagnosed during the period of 1990-2001 suffering from prostate cancer were included in this study. The result showed that maximum number of tumours were in age group ranging from 61-70 years, [58% of total cases]. Sixteen were [32%] well-differentiated tumours, twenty-eight [56%], moderately differentiated tumours and six [12%] were labelled as undifferentiated tumours. It was concluded that the majority of tumors were moderately differentiated tumours. Early diagnosis is useful for patients; because high grade tumours have bad prognostic markers

ABSTRACT

A number of studies have shown the impact of attending the classes during the session on examination results of students. Students with good lecture attendance show good results while those with poor lecture attendance are at risk for poor performance in the examinations. In this study we wanted to test this in students of basic medical sciences in our set up. All the students in Basic Medical Sciences of Gomal Medical College, D.I. Khan, Pakistan, during the session 1999-2000 were enrolled for this study. Performance of these students in one of their three annual term tests, which covered duration of studies for four months, from February 2000 to May 2000, was analyzed. Students were grouped into two, Group-A with =75% attendance and Group-B with <75% attendance. The frequency of failure in the two groups was compared using the chi square test. Results of the term test showed that the percentage of failure in students of Group-B with less than 75%, attendance was significantly higher when compared to Group-A with equal or more than 75% attendance. Our results supported the previous studies showing that attendance in the classes during teaching sessions had a direct impact on performance of students in the examinations. Students with good attendance show good results while those with poor attendance are at risk for poor performance during examinations in basic medical sciences
