ABSTRACT
Pot experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of sprays with GA [100 ppm], Zn at two doses [75 and 100 ppm] and a combination of both on Ocimum basilicum plants grown in two types of soil. The results revealed that soil type had no effect on plant height, branches number and fresh weight of the herb at the first and second cut, meanwhile, the third cut of the basil plants grown in sandy loamy soil surpassed the corresponding grown in calcareous soil. GA-treatment increased growth characters and carbohydrate content in both soils but oil content only in sandy loamy one. Combined treatments of GA and Zn gave the highest values of herb yield, carbohydrate and oil content compared with other treatments. Data obtained from interaction treatments showed that the combination between GA and Zn [75 ppm] gave the best results under calcareous conditions

The effect of soil types on the growth, oil and carbohydrate content of geranium plants was studied during two successive seasons. The results could be summarized as follows 1. The maximum yield of herb, oil and carbohydrate contents were obtained as a result of growing cuttings in clay loam soil compared with sandy one. 2. Terminal cutting gave the highest values of herb yield, oil and carbohydrates fractions compared with other cutting type. 3. Data obtained from interaction treatments showed that the combination between medium cuttings and clay loam soil gave the best results
