ABSTRACT

Resistance to imatinib is a significant clinical issue, and the underlying mechanism of this resistance is multifactorial. The efficacy of imatinib in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in achieving a high remission rate and improving prognosis has seriously been challenged by the development of mutants of BCR-ABL gene, which resist the action of imatinib, which is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor. We present here a case of a 35-year-old male, a known case of CML on imatinib therapy, the patient eventually landed in blast crisis and succumbed to the disease and secondary infections.

ABSTRACT

Incidence of diffuse alveolar damage is rarely seen after administration of docetaxel used alone or in combination with other chemotherapeutic drugs in absence of radiation. Here we present one such patient who developed diffuse alveolar pneumonitis after administration of first dose of docetaxel and the patient responded to steroids rather than antibiotics and antifungal drugs confirming the cause. This rapid onset drug induced alveolar pneumonitis illustrates that no therapeutic intervention is without its intrinsic and unanticipated risks.

ABSTRACT

Carbamazepine is a commonly used antiepileptic drug. Apart from the neurological side-effects, hematological side-effects in form of aplastic anemia and agranulocytosis are well-documented. We report an unusual case of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) associated with the long term use of carbamazepine. On hospitalization, the drug carbamazepine was stopped and after confirmation of the diagnosis, patient was started on standard treatment for ALL.
