ABSTRACT

Surveys of public knowledge and attitudes regarding AIDS, some limited and some fairly extensive have been conducted in Brazil, Haiti, México, and the Dominican Republic-the four Latin Américan countries with the largest numbers of reported cases. These survey were not closely comparable or necessarily representative but they have provided useful insights into public awareness of and attitudes toward AIDS in the áreas involved. The Brazilian survey, based on interview of over 5 000 people in eight cities, indicated that about two-thirds of the survey subjects were aware of the principal human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission routes. Some 20 percent of these subjects said they had changed their lifestyles or sexual pratices in a way reducing their exposure to infection. The Mexican survey, conducte by the Ministry of Health in 1987, included 1 961 subjects at least 15 years of age in México City. Most of those surveyed (86 percent) said AIDS was an infectious disease; nearly all were aware of the major transmission routes; two-thirds indicated that celibacy or monogamy with someone free of the AIDS virus were means of avoiding infection; and about half (52 percent) felt condoms were an effective barrier agains HIV. The 1978 Dominican survey involved administration of a 94-item questionaire to 469 people in Santo Domingo. The results showed considerable improvement in awareness of AIDS
