ABSTRACT

Angiomyolipoma is a rare benign tumor and approximately 20 to 50% of patients with the diagnosis of angiomyolipoma have some or all of the other stigma of tuberous sclerosis. Patients with tuberous sclerosis tend to be younger, more likely to have multifocal and bilateral disease. Angiomyolipoma which is not associated with tuberous sclerosis mostly affects middle aged women. According to literature data, angiomyolipoma is very rare in child and almost exclusively associated with tuberous sclerosis. We report a case of 14 year-old girl who has a renal angiomyolipoma without clinical evidence of tuberous sclerosis.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate whether the result of RigiScan after intracorporeal injection could predict the result of duplex ultrasonography, and determine the necessity of duplex ultrasonography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed both RigiScan and duplex ultrasonography after intracorporeal injection in 18 men with erectile dysfunction. All of the patients were evaluated by history taking, physical examination, laboratory test, hormonal tests, and neurologic examination before RigiScan and duplex ultrasonography. We measured maximal arterial diameter, peak systolic velocity, end-diastolic velocity using a 7 MHz. color Doppler unit and these results of duplex ultrasonography were compared with penile rigidity and tumescence measured by RigiScan. RESULTS: The positive and negative predictive value of RigiScan were 81.8% and 85.7%, respectively. The result of RigiScan was comparable with that of duplex ultrasonography and the accuracy of RigiScan was resonable. CONCLUSIONS: According to this results, duplex ultrasonography was needed if the response of RigiScan is abnormal after intracorporeal injection. However, duplex ultrasonography can be ommitted if the response of RigiScan is normal after intracorporeal injection.

ABSTRACT

Acute scrotal swelling is unusual in neonates and it should be treated as an emergency, especially in case with a clear urine. Only a few cases of an infected hydrocele have been previously described in the neonateal period. We report a 29-days-old newborn who presented with acute scrotal swelling that proved to be an idiopathic infected hydrocele on surgical exploration.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Peripheral adrenergic nervous system controls the penile erection and alpha adrenoceptors greatly outnumber beta adrenoceptors. It is known that adrenaline has a facilitatory effect but serotonin has an inhibitory effect on sexual drive centrally. But few about the effect of central alpha adrenergic drug to the release of serotonin centrally are known. Major adrenergic and serotoninergic innervation is found at the hippocampus. This study was performed to investigate the effect of alpha adrenergic drugs on serotonergic nervous system in rat hippocampal slices. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The hippocampus from the male rat brain was sliced. After 30 minutes` preincubation in the normal buffer, the slices were incubated for 20 minutes in a buffer containing 0.1 microM [3H]5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT) for uptake, and washed. After administration of phenylephrine or clonidine, the release of [3H]5-HT into the buffer was measured and the radioactivities in each buffer and the tissue were counted and the results were expressed as a percentage of the total activity. The value of released [3H]5-HT was expressed as percent of the value at 50 minutes when a steady state of [3H]5-HT release was obtained. RESULTS: After administration of phenylephrine(10-5 M), clonidine(10-5 M), the values(mean+/-SE) were 133.4+/-7.3, 103.0+/-0.3 at 60 minutes and 128.8+/-4.6, 100.4+/-4.1(%) at 70 minutes compared to the values of control group, 96.6+/-1.9 % at 60 minutes and 89.6+/-2.3% at 70 minutes. The release of serotonin was increased significantly after administration of phenylephrine. CONCLUSIONS: It is suggested that alpha-1 adrenergic drugs may increase the release of serotonin and therefore the integration of these two neurotransmitters may be considered.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The inflammation associated with leukocytospermia and infection has been implicated as a cause of infertility. Inflammatory cells cause subfertility through the effects of chemical mediators or cytokines. The seminal inflammatory cytokines are present in increased quantities if inflammatory white blood cells are present in semen and this increase under removed white blood cells may be related to sperm motility. Impairments in sperm motility reported that were induced by exposure of human sperm to recombinant interferon-gamma although this findings have been debated. We examined the change of parameters of sperm motility after administration of Interferon gamma(IFN-gamma) to sperm to evaluate the effect of cytokine on sperm motility. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Semens from 20 healthy males were obtained. With swim up procedure, sperms with active motility were got and incubated in HAM`s F10 culture media for 24 hours. IFN-gamma 1000ng/ml, 10ng/ml and 0.1ng/ml were administered before incubation, respectively. Parameters of sperm motility such as curvilinear velocity(VCL), average path velocity(VAP), straight line velocity(VSL), lateral head displacement(ALH) and beat cross frequency(BCF) were recorded with Hamilton-Thorne computer semen analysis system before incubation, 5, 7 and 24 hour thereafter. They were expressed as percentage of the value of parameters before incubation. RESULTS: There were statistically significant decreases of VCL, VAP, VSL, BCF in IFN-gamma 1000ng/ml administration after 24 hours. CONCLUSIONS: The administration of IFN-gamma decrease the parameters of sperm motility and the increase of IFN-gamma was presumed to affect sperm motility. It is suggested that seminal IFN-gamma may affect sperm motility.
