ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate physeal remodeling after internal fixation of slipped capital femoral epiphysis, We performed a retrospective review of the medical records and radiographs of 14 children (17 cases) who had had slipped capital femoral epiphysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed 14 patients who had slipped capital femoral epiphysis. They were divided two groups. Group I were in situ pinning with single screw and group II were corrective osteotomy with multiple pinning. We identified physeal remodeling camparing with their preoperative, postoperative and last follow-up radiographs with measuring physeal- shaft angle. RESULTS: Early closure of the physis was observed in 6 cases among 14 patients (17 hips). Compared with their postoperative radiographs, the last follow up radiographic study revealed that physeal remodeling was observed in 4 patients (4 hips) at group I (mean, 7.8degree), in 2 patients (3 hips) at group II (mean, 10.7degree). CONCLUSION: In this study, physeal remodeling was observed in 4 patients (4 hips) in group I and 2 patients (3 hips) in group II. The incidence of physeal remodeling was related with degree of epiphyseal slippage, and age was not related with physeal remodeling potential.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate clinical results of posterior cruciate retaining TKA according to the preoperative range of motion (ROM), degree of deformity and obesity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 81 cases were followed up more than 3 years. All cases were evaluated according to degree of preoperative ROM and varus deformity, presence of flexion contracture and BMI scale for obesity. Clinical and radiological evaluation systems were used with American knee society scale. RESULTS: Postoperative ROM according to the degree of preoperative ROM showed that the postoperative ROM in the good preoperative ROM group was better compared to the worse preoperative ROM groups and the results of knee scores showed the similar condition. Flex-ion contracture group revealed the better clinical results (p>0.05) compared to the group without contracture. The improvement of knee and functional scores was statistically significant in the more deformed varus groups and in the normal BMI group compared to the more obese groups. CONCLUSION: Good clinical results and satisfactory postoperative ROM are obtained by the good preoperative ROM, appropriate technique of maintaining adequate soft tissue balance in the deformed knee and preoperative weight control.

ABSTRACT

The first case of testicular teratocarcinoma in Korea, found in 24 year old service man was reported. Complication of the metastases to various organs, gynecomastia and hydrocele was seen at the first examination and simple orchiectomy and delayed x-ray deep therapy were not effective to survive this case. The patient died 3 months after the affliction. Autopsy revealed matastases were to lung, spleen, lower poles of both Kidneys, mediastinal and lumbar paraaortic lymph nodes and histopathological examination showed the teratocarcinoma composed of seminoma, embryonic carcinoma and chorioepitheliomatous elements. Additionally, 13 cases of testis tumors reported in literatures of recent years in-country have peen reviewed.

ABSTRACT

On various abdominal X-ray examination, 4 cases of stone-like shadow over kidney area due to swallowed pills were found. Twenty four kinds of tablets in country were investigated in their radiopacity. The causes of these shadows were mainly due to mineral contents(iron, calcium etc.)and coating substances of these tablets. The differentiation between these shadows and the true upper urinary stone can be made easily on the X-ray film with their history and the shape of shadows.
