ABSTRACT

Infective endocarditis involving the right side of the heart occurs rarely and often involves the tricuspid valve. The isolated pulmonary valve infective endocarditis (IPVIE) is a less common condition that occurs in specific population. The double outlet right ventricle (DORV) is an unusual congenital heart disease. The association of DORV and IPVIE darkens the prognosis. We report two cases of the association of DORV and IPVIE. The transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is the base to the diagnosis. Right sided infective endocarditis in the lack of a guided strategy remains a therapeutic challenge.

Xeroderma Pigmentosum complementation group C (XPC) protein is involved in recognition of global genome DNA damages during NER (GG-NER) and it has been studied in different organisms due to its importance in other cellular processes. In this work, we studied NER proteins in Trypanosoma cruzi and Trypanosoma evansi, parasites of humans and animals respectively. We performed three-dimensional models of XPC proteins from T. cruzi and T. evansi and observed few structural differences between these proteins. In our tests, insertion of XPC gene from T. evansi (TevXPC) in T. cruzi resulted in slower cell growth under normal conditions. After cisplatin treatment, T. cruzi overexpressing its own XPC gene (TcXPC) was able to recover cell division rates faster than T. cruzi expressing TevXPC gene. Based on these tests, it is suggested that TevXPC (being an exogenous protein in T. cruzi) interferes negatively in cellular processes where TcXPC (the endogenous protein) is involved. This probably occurred due interaction of TevXPC with some endogenous molecules or proteins from T. cruzi but incapacity of interaction with others. This reinforces the importance of correctly XPC functioning within the cell.

ABSTRACT Several population studies showed an association between variation in pain sensitivity and genetic polymorphisms located in Prodynorphin (PDYN) and Kappa Opioid Receptor (OPRK1) human genes. We analysed polymorphisms of these two genes to characterise their variation in Argentinian populations, as well as to evaluate their association with acute pain sensitivity. We studied 11 genetic markers in individuals from four locations in Argentina (Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, La Plata, Resistencia, and Misión Nueva Pompeya), calculated the population parameters, and evaluated the possible association among pain sensitivity, clinical, and genetic variables through a Generalised Estimating Equation model. High linkage disequilibrium was observed in the four populations for both genes, and significant differences were found among frequencies of Argentinian populations and those from other continents reported in the 1000 Genomes Project. Four PDYN gene polymorphisms from 3´ untranslated region and exon 4 showed association with acute pain sensitivity. One genotype of each of these polymorphisms was associated with a higher pain sensitivity, probably related with the activation of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. We found a strong association with acute pain for the following clinical variables: 1) time after surgery, 2) intravenous klosidol supplied every 8 h, and 3) type of incision. Our results highlight the importance of a regional study of genetic variants which influence pain sensitivity and analgesic response.


RESUMEN La asociación entre la sensibilidad al dolor y los polimorfismos que presentan los genes humanos de prodinorfina (PDYN) y receptor opioide kappa (OPRK1) se ha evidenciado en distintos estudios poblacionales. Con el objetivo de caracterizar la variación de estos genes y evaluar su asociación con dolor agudo en la población argentina, analizamos 11 polimorfismos en individuos provenientes de cuatro localidades argentinas (Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, La Plata, Resistencia, y Misión Nueva Pompeya). Calculamos los parámetros poblacionales y evaluamos la posible asociación entre sensibilidad al dolor, variables clínicas y variables genéticas a través de un modelo de ecuación generalizada de estimación. Se observó alto desequilibrio de ligamiento para ambos genes en las cuatro poblaciones analizadas, y se encontraron diferencias significativas entre las frecuencias de poblaciones argentinas y las reportadas en el Proyecto 1000 Genomes para poblaciones de otros continentes. Cuatro polimorfismos de la región 3´UTR y el exón 4 de PDYN mostraron asociación con la sensibilidad al dolor agudo. En cada uno de estos polimorfismos, un genotipo resultó asociado con alta sensibilidad al dolor, probablemente en relación con la activación de receptores N-metil-D-aspartato (NMDA). Encontramos una fuerte asociación con dolor agudo para las siguientes variables clínicas: 1) tiempo post-cirugía, 2) administración intravenosa de klosidol cada 8 h, y 3) tipo de incisión. Nuestros resultados resaltan la importancia de realizar estudios regionales de variables genéticas que influyen en la sensibilidad al dolor y la respuesta analgésica.

Background: Acrylamide input on gastric mucosa lesion is known but not fully elucidated. In this study the impact of dietary acrylamide on gastric acid secretion; an aggressive factor capable of causing erosion of the stomach tissue was evaluated to explain possible reason why acrylamide could induce gastric mucosa lesion. Thus, the study focuses on the impact of dietary acrylamide on gastric acid secretion and its association with mucosa lesion. Materials and Methods: Fifteen (15) male Sprague-Dawley rats were grouped into three groups (n = 5). Group 1 (control) was fed with standard rat diet, Group 2 and 3 were fed with standard rat diet contaminated with acrylamide doses (7.5mg/kg and 15mg/kg respectively) reported to compromise gastric mucosa integrity. The experimental animals were allowed free access to their various feed and drinking water ad libitum for 4 weeks. Impact of the dietary acrylamide on gastric acid secretion, gastric acidity and stomach tissue oxidative stress biomarkers (lipid peroxidation (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), Glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and Catalase, CAT) were determined. Results: Average dietary consumption across the groups was 90.88% per week. Acrylamide contaminated diet significantly increased gastric acid secretion and gastric acidity in a dose dependent manner when compared to control, P<0.01. Dietary acrylamide also induced oxidative stress on stomach tissues by significantly increasing MDA as well as decreasing SOD, GPx, and CAT of the stomach in a dose dependent manner when compared to control, P<0.01. Conclusion: Findings from the study suggests that oxidative stress induced on stomach tissue by dietary acrylamide could be as a result of the increase in gastric acid secretion and gastric acidity observed.

ABSTRACT

The visual ability of road users is fundamental to traffic safety. Despite the high burden of traffic crashes and associated mortality in low-income countries such as Nigeria, evidence for an association between vision function and traffic safety outcomes is scarce. Therefore, the aim of this work was to evaluate the visual acuity of commercial motorcyclists operating within the main campus of Abia State University, Uturu. Two hundred operators who had been on the job for at least one year constituted the test population, while staff and students of Abia State University, Uturu, who were sex and aged-matched and who are not commercial motor cyclists constituted the control group. Data were obtained with the aid of a structured questionnaire and clinical examinations were carried out by standard procedures. Results showed that Snellen抯 fraction which is a indicator of visual acuity for the left eye of control and test groups was recorded as 0.98+- 0.30 and 0.88+- 0.35 respectively and for the right eyes 0.99+- 0.10 and 0.87+- 0.50 respectively. Only 38% of test group had normal visual acuity of 6/6 compared to 73% of control. Visual acuity correlated negatively with age for the left (r = - 0.712) and right (r = - 0.740) eyes as well as with length of service for left (r = -0.623 and right (r = - 0.632) eyes of motorcyclist operators. In conclusion, visual acuity was inversely proportional to age and length of service.

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to extract milk from African breadfruit, tigernut, coconut and date fruit and to observe the changes in the microbial load of milk during storage. The formulated plant milk beverages were compared to conventional plant milk beverage “Vita milk” which served as the control sample. Microbial counts, characterization and identification were carried out on the beverage samples every 7 days for up to 35 days. The total viable count of the toasted breadfruit-based samples ranged from 3.7 × 102 cfu/ml to 5.1 × 102cfu/ml and the values were lower than those recorded from the cooked breadfruit-based samples which ranged from 3.95 ×102 cfu/ml to 6.10 × 102 cfu/ml. There were no presence of coliform bacteria in the formulated beverage samples and the reference sample from 1 to 21 days of storage. After these periods, coliform bacteria were recorded in 3 samples of the formulated plant milk and in all the formulated beverage samples after 35 days of storage. The percentage occurrence of Staphylococcus species according to the result was low on the 1st day of storage (18.2%), but increases with storage period up to 28.7% after 35 days of storage. The percentage occurrence of Aspergillus species which is another organism of public health concern as recorded from the beverage samples throughout the period of storage were low and below the specified tolerable set by Codex Alimentarius which is < 50ug/ml. The overall microbial qualities of the formulated beverage were safe and stable for the 1st 21 days of storage and up until 28 days for the control sample. The study revealed that milk beverages formulated from these plants gave products that are comparable to the conventional soy bean based vitamilk. The microbiological stability of the formulated plant milk samples were relatively less compared to the vitamilk.

ABSTRACT

In the coastal areas of the world, most Vibrio species have been incriminated as notorious agents causing foodborne, wound and other infections. These pathogens are known to be associated with the consumption of raw or undercooked seafoods or the exposure of wounds to warm seawater. Aim: Therefore, this research work was designed with the aim of assessing the microbiological quality of the water bodies as well as the seafoods consumed in Cross River State (CRS). Study Design: The Study was designed using the completely randomized block design and the data was analyzed using of two-way analysis of variance, Generalized Linear Model Univariate analysis. Significant means were separated using the Least significant difference (LSD). Place and Duration of Study: This study was done in the Department of Microbiology, University of CRS, Calabar, CRS, Nigeria, between 2016-2019. Methodology: we evaluated a variety of seafoods viz; crayfish, blue crabs, Periwinkles, apple nails, red lobsters etc. collected from major Beaches, markets and other sale points and water sources (rivers streams sea and gutters) in Calabar, CRS of Nigeria, using standard bacteriological techniques, for the prevalence of Vibrio species. Results: The mean percentage mean viable cell counts obtained ranged from 1.79�45 (seawater)-9.15�79CFU/mL (gutter water) and 7.68�58 (Blue Crab)- 11.37�82 CFU/g (fish) in the Rainy season. The counts for the Dry season Ranged from 1.79 �42 (Seawater)-8.94� 4.51(gutter water), and 5.83 7.21 CFU/g (apple snail) -12.64 5.95 CFU/g (Fish). The total percentage mean counts obtained were 8.09�91 CFU/mL in the Rainy Season to 7.61�58 CFU/mL in the dry Season. From both seasons, the overall total mean count was 11.09�94 CFU/ml. From the nine locations evaluated in this study, it was observed that the Mean percentage counts for the Northern Senatorial District (NSD) ranged from 2.81� 3.49 (Ogoja)- 3.14 �07CFU/mL (Obudu). For the Central (CSD) the range was from 3.34 �20 (Boki)- 9.89 �15 (Ikom), while for the Southern (SSD) it was from12.01� 6.52 (Akamkpa)- 14.47 �44 (Calabar). The overall Total percentage mean counts from all the three Senatorial Districts was 14.03�86 CFU/mL. From the Northern Senatorial District, the total Percentage mean was 3.01�77 CFU/mL, 7.05�79 CFU/mL from the Central and 13.49� 5.72 CFU/mL from the Southern Senatorial District. The Vibrio pathotypes isolated include Vibrio cholerae (V. cholerae) (both O1 and non-O1 serotypes) 1155 (31.61%), Vibrio parahaemolyticus (V. parahaemolyticus), 752 (20.58%), Vibrio fluvialis (V. fluvialis) 480 (13.14%), V. vulnificus 473 (12.94%) Vibrio mimicus (V. mimicus) 400 (10.95%) and Other Vibrios 394 (10.78%). Out of the 3654 Vibrio isolates, the greatest number 663�31 (18.14%) were from Seawater, while the least 133�.84 (3.64%) were from the Gutter Water. Also, the highest number 1245�61 (34.07%) came from Calabar, and the least 102�.65 (2.79%) from Obanlikwu. The NSD had the least number 327 (8.95%), followed by the CSD with 570 (15.59%) and then the SSD with 2757 (75.45%) as the highest number of isolates. Conclusion: The presence of these pathogenic bacterial species in common seafoods in this area is of great public health concern. It is therefore important that serious emphasis be laid on proper cooking of these seafoods as well as the establishment of regular hygiene surveillance strategies in the state.

ABSTRACT

Candida albicans is the most frequently isolated opportunistic pathogen in the female genital tract, with 92.3% of cases in Brazil associated with vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC). Linalool is a monoterpene compound from plants of the genera Cinnamomum, Coriandrum, Lavandula, and Citrus that has demonstrated a fungicidal effect on strains of Candida spp., but its mechanism of action is still unknown. For this purpose, broth microdilution techniques were applied, as well as molecular docking in a predictive manner for this mechanism. The main results of this study indicated that the C. albicans strains analyzed were resistant to fluconazole and sensitive to linalool at a dose of 256 µg/mL. Furthermore, the increase in the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of linalool in the presence of sorbitol and ergosterol indicated that this molecule possibly affects the cell wall and plasma membrane integrity of C. albicans. Molecular docking of linalool with proteins that are key in the biosynthesis and maintenance of the cell wall and the fungal plasma membrane integrity demonstrated the possibility of linalool interacting with three important enzymes: 1,3-β-glucan synthase, lanosterol 14α-demethylase, and Δ 14-sterol reductase. In silico analysis showed that this monoterpene has theoretical but significant oral bioavailability, low toxic potential, and high similarity to pharmaceuticals. Therefore, the findings of this study indicated that linalool probably causes damage to the cell wall and plasma membrane of C. albicans, possibly by interaction with important enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of these fungal structures, in addition to presenting low in silico toxic potential.

INT RODUCTIO N: Th e eld erly h ypert en si ve pa ti ent s of ten h aveincreased prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors and their attendantco-morbidities. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalenceof cardiometabolic risk factors and blood pressure control among elderlyhypertensive patients, and to determine the influence of modifiablecardiometabolic risk factors on the control of hypertension amongelderly hypertensive patients.SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A case-control comparative and hospital-based study involving a total of 190 consenting elderly (>65 years),hypertensive patients (subjects) (n=100) and normotensive controls(n=90) was carried out over a period of ten months. Using interviewer-administered questionnaire, biodata and information regarding theirlifestyle was obtained. Standard protocols were used to measure bloodpressure, weight, height, waist circumference, fasting plasma glucoseand fasting lipid profile of the subjects. Body mass index was derivedfrom weight and height.RESULTS: The mean age of the subjects was 71.5 ± 6.3 years and thecontrols was 72.3 ± 7.2 years. Forty-eight percent (48%) and 47.8% ofthe subjects and controls were females (p = 0.651). The level of controlof hyperten sion was poor in over two-thirds (68%) of the elderlyhypertensive patients. The prevalence of modifiable cardiometabolicrisk factors burden was higher in the hypertensive subjects when comparedwith the controls. Prevalence of Dyslipidaemia was 76% in the subjectsand 51% in the controls (p = 0.004). Prevalence of Diabetes Mellituswas 40% among the subjects and 17.8% in the controls (p = 0.0001);prevalence of Obesity was 24% in the subjects and 4.4% in the controls(p=<0.001); prevalence of excess alcohol intake was 49% in the subjectsand 14.4% in the controls (p=<0.001). Prevalence of sedentary lifestyle was high in both the subjects (53%) and controls (50%), p=0.679.Poor blood pressure control was predicted by dyslipidaemia and centralobesity.CONCLUSION: The level of control of hypertension was poor amongthe elderly and modifiable cardiometabolic risk factors were relativelyprevalent. Central obesity and dyslipidaemia were predictive of poorcontrol of hypertension. Addressing these factors may therefore improveblood pressure control

Introduction : le diabète est un véritable fléau mondial par sa prévalence en croissance. Les objectifs de la présente étude étaient de déterminer la prévalence du diabète et d'identifier les facteurs associés au diabète chez les conducteurs de taximotos de la ville de Parakou en 2021. Méthodes : il s'agissait d'une étude transversale, descriptive et analytique concernant les conducteurs de taxi-motos de la ville de Parakou et réalisée du 08 février au 31 mars 2021. Résultats : au total 422 conducteurs de taxi-motos enquêtés. L'âge moyen était de 36,45±10 ans ; 85,8% avaient un revenu mensuel d'au moins 40000 FCFA, 9,7% avaient une hypertension artérielle. L'anxiété et la dépression étaient présentes respectivement chez 5,5% et 15,9 % des sujets enquêtés. La prévalence du diabète était de 2,84%. Les facteurs qui étaient significativement associés sont l'âge de 30 ans et plus (p=0,001), le tour de taille élevé (p=0,03) et la durée de sommeil journalier anormale (p=0,03). Conclusion : la prévalence du diabète est faible chez les conducteurs de taxi-motos et les facteurs associés sont l'âge de 30 ans et plus, le tour de taille élevé et la durée de sommeil journalier anormale. Il est important de communiquer pour un changement de comportement afin que les conducteurs de taximotos adoptent une hygiène de vie saine.


Introduction: Diabetes is a real global scourge due to its growing prevalence. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of diabetes and to identify the associated factors with diabetes among motorcycle cab drivers of Parakou city in 2021. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study of motorcycle cab drivers in Parakou, city conducted from February 8 to March 31, 2021. Results: a total of 422 subjects surveyed. The average age was 36.45±10 years; 85.8% had a monthly income of at least 40,000 FCFA, 9.7% had high blood pressure. Anxiety and depression were present respectively in 5.5% and 15.9% of the subjects surveyed. The prevalence of diabetes was 2.84%. The factors that were significantly associated with diabetes were age 30 years and older (p=0.001), high waist circumference (p=0.03) and abnormal daily sleep duration (p=0.03). Conclusion: The prevalence of diabetes is low among motorcycle cab drivers and the associated factors are age 30 years and over, high waist circumference and abnormal daily sleep duration.

ABSTRACT

The Paediatric Association of Nigeria first published management guideline for community-acquired pneumonia in 2015 and covered available evidence at that time. This update represents a review of available recent evidence statements regarding the management of pneumonia in children, while at the same time incorporating relevant materials from the first edition of the guideline. The guideline is developed to assist clinicians in the care of children with CAP. The recommendations provided in this guideline may not be the only approach to management, since there are considerable variations among children in the clinical course of CAP.The goal of this guideline is to reduce morbidity and mortality rate of CAP in children by providing recommendations that may be relevant in assisting clinicians to make timely diagnosis and institute appropriate antibiotic therapy of children with CAP. Summarized below are recommendations made in the new 2021 CAP guideline. As part of the recommendations, the quality of the evidence is provided and the grade of the recommendation indicated.The details of the background, methods and evidence summaries that support each of these recommendations can be found in the full text of the guideline.

(Malpighiales: Caryocaraceae) is widely distributed in the Brazilian savanna and its fruits are used by humans for food, production of cosmetics, lubricants, and in the pharmaceutical industry. This plant is damaged by galling insects. Number of these galling insects and their parasitoids was recorded, in the field (galls) and in the laboratory (adults emerged from the galls), from three C. brasiliense crown heights, during three years. Numbers of adults of Eurytoma sp. (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae), galling insect (younger attack) and Sycophila sp. (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) (a parasitoid of Eurytoma sp.), were greater on the apical parts of C. brasiliense tree crowns. Numbers and groups of Eurytoma sp. globoid galls (older attack) were higher in the median and basal crown parts. The numbers of Eurytoma sp. galls were higher on apical part of C. brasiliense tree crown and also of their parasitoids.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different temperatures on incubation variables, performance, and morphometry of the duodenal mucosa of Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) submitted to chronic heat stress after hatching. We distributed 540 eggs in three incubators with a temperature of 37.8°C and 60% of humidity. From the 6th day of incubation until hatching, the temperatures were adjusted to (37.8°C, 38.5°C and 39.5°C). After hatching, quails were evaluated for the quality score, weighed, and distributed in a completely randomized design with three incubation temperatures (37.8, 38.5, and 39.5°C) and two ambient temperatures (stress and thermoneutral). At 10, 20, 30, and 40 days they were weighed to determine the live weight (g) and weight gain(g). To collect the duodenum and determine morphometric parameters, we euthanized four quails of each treatment. The data were analyzed, and the differences between the means determined by the Tukey test at 5%. The incubation temperature of 39.5°C provided lower hatching rate and the live weight at birth; however, from the 10th day of age, increased live weight, weight gain, and positively influenced the morphological parameters of the duodenal mucosa in situations of chronic stress.(AU)


Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos de diferentes temperaturas de incubação sobre as variáveis de incubação, desempenho e morfometria da mucosa duodenal de codornas japonesas (Coturnix coturnix japonica) submetidas ao estresse térmico crônico por calor após eclosão. Foram distribuídos 540 ovos em três incubadoras, com temperatura de 37,8°C e umidade 60%. A partir do sexto dia de incubação até a eclosão, as temperaturas foram ajustadas para 37,8°C, 38,5°C e 39,5°C. Após a eclosão, as codornas foram avaliadas quanto ao escore de qualidade, pesadas e distribuídas em um delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com três temperaturas de incubação (37,8ºC, 38,5ºC e 39,5°C) e duas temperaturas ambientes (estresse e termoneutro). Aos 10, 20, 30 e 40 dias, foram pesadas para determinar o peso vivo (g) e o ganho de peso(g). Quatro codornas de cada tratamento foram eutanasiadas para coleta do duodeno, para determinar os parâmetros morfométricos. Os dados foram analisados e as diferenças entre as médias foram determinadas pelo teste de Tukey a 5%. A temperatura de incubação de 39,5°C proporcionou menor taxa de eclosão e menor peso vivo ao nascer, entretanto, a partir do 10° dia de idade, essa temperatura aumentou o peso vivo, o ganho de peso e influenciou positivamente os parâmetros morfológicos da mucosa duodenal em situações de estresse crônico.(AU)

@#Diseases such as malaria, dengue, Zika and chikungunya remain endemic in many countries. Setting and deploying traps to capture the host/vector species are fundamental to understand their density and distributions. Human effort to manage the trap data accurately and timely is an exhaustive endeavour when the study area expands and period prolongs. One stop mobile app to manage and monitor the process of targeted species trapping, from field to laboratory level is still scarce. Toward this end, we developed a new mobile app named “PesTrapp” to acquire the vector density index based on the mobile updates of ovitraps and species information in field and laboratory. This study aimed to highlight the mobile app’s development and design, elucidate the practical user experiences of using the app and evaluate the preliminary user assessment of the mobile app. The mobile app was developed using mobile framework and database. User evaluation of the mobile app was based on the adjusted Mobile App Rating Scale and Standardized User Experience Percentile Rank Questionnaire. The process flows of system design and detailed screen layouts were described. The user experiences with and without the app in a project to study Aedes surveillance in six study sites in Selangor, Malaysia were elucidated. The overall mean user evaluation score of the mobile app was 4.0 out of 5 (SD=0.6), reflects its acceptability of the users. The PesTrapp, a one-stop solution, is anticipated to improve the entomological surveillance work processes. This new mobile app can contribute as a tool in the vector control countermeasure strategies.

RESUMEN Introducción: Existen diferentes sistemas de graduación para interpretar la biopsia de glándula salival menor (BGSM) en pacientes con síntomas secos. En la actualidad la metodología recomendada (Focus Score [FS]), aunque no se emplea de forma rutinaria, conlleva discrepancias diagnósticas. Objetivo: Determinar la concordancia de la lectura histopatológica de BGSM entre las técnicas FS y Chisholm Mason (CM) para el diagnóstico de sialoadenitis linfocítica focal en el hospital de San José, entre enero de 2017 y junio de 2018. Métodos: Estudio de concordancia. Se incluyeron BGSM de pacientes con síntomas secos. Se excluyó material no apto para el estudio, o con menos de 4 lóbulos o menos de 8 mm de área. Se clasificaron utilizando las técnicas FS y CM por 2 evaluadores independientes. Se evaluó el acuerdo interobservador, intraobsevador y global entre las pruebas mediante el coeficiente de Kappa de Cohen. Resultados: Se evaluaron 130 biopsias. Los valores K intraobservador entre FS y CM fueron 0,42 para el observador 1 y 0,23 para el observador 2. Los valores K del acuerdo interobservador fueron 0,47 para FS y 0,65 para CM. La concordancia entre los 2 sistemas de puntuación fue K de 0,13. Conclusiones: Se evidencia una probable sobreestimación de focos con CM, que resalta sus debilidades, y mayor precisión con FS. Por ende, la concordancia entre las 2 pruebas es débil. Es necesario un mayor esfuerzo para el uso del método estandarizado de lectura de BGSM con el FS para una correcta interpretación y beneficio en la clasificación de pacientes con síndrome seco.


ABSTRACT Introduction: There are different grading systems for interpreting the minor salivary gland biopsy (MSGB) in patients with dry symptoms (Sicca). The recommended methodology is currently the Focus Score (FS), which, although not performed routinely, results in diagnostic discrepancies. Objective: To determine the concordance of the histopathological reading of MSGB between the FS and Chisholm Mason (CM) techniques for diagnosis of focal lymphocytic sialadenitis at the San José Hospital between January 2017 and June 2018. Methods: Concordance study. MSGB of patients with sicca symptoms were included. Material not suitable for study and / or with less than 4 lobules and / or less than 8 mm of surface area was excluded. They were classified, using the FS and CM techniques, by two independent evaluators. The inter-observer, intra-observer, and overall agreement between the tests were evaluated using Cohen's Kappa coefficient. Results: A total of 130 biopsies were evaluated. The intra-observer K values between FS and CM were 0.42 for observer 1, and 0.23 for observer 2. The K values of the inter-observer agreement were 0.47 for FS, and 0.65 for CM. The concordance between the two scoring systems was K = 0.13. Conclusions: There is evidence of a probable over-estimation of foci with CM, highlighting its weaknesses and greater precision with FS technique, resulting in the weak concordance between the two tests. A greater effort is necessary for the use of the standardised MSGB FS reading method for a correct interpretation and benefit in the classification of patients with dry syndrome.

RESUMEN En Colombia, el departamento de Boyacá tiene uno de los mayores rendimientos de caña de azúcar (Saccharum spp.), para la producción de panela; sin embargo, los productores demandan constantemente la evaluación de material genético, que pueda aumentar los rendimientos por unidad de área y las características agroindustriales de los materiales tradicionales, de mayor dominio en la región. Con la finalidad de estimar los rendimientos de caña y de panela por hectárea, se evaluaron, a nivel experimental, los cultivares CC 01-1940, CC 99-2282, CC 05-940, CC 03-469, CC 06-791, en el municipio de Moniquirá, Boyacá. Posteriormente, se realizaron pruebas comerciales de molienda, con el mejor cultivar en Moniquirá y en San José de Pare, Boyacá, junto a los testigos de cada zona Caña Buena y RD 75-11, respectivamente. Experimentalmente, se destacó el cultivar CC 01-1940, con una producción de 183,3t/ha de caña (TCH), 24,2 toneladas de panela por hectárea (TPH), así como una conversión de 13,2% de panela (CP). En prueba comercial de molienda en San José de Pare, se encontró que CC 01-1940 alcanzó una producción de 221,9 TCH y 26,1 TPH, superando por más de 30 toneladas de caña y 5,2 toneladas de panela, al reporte alcanzado por RD 75-11. Para el municipio de Moniquirá, CC 01-1940 obtuvo 158,5 TCH, 18,5 TPH y 11,6% CP, superando al cultivar testigo Caña Buena.


ABSTRACT In Colombia, the department of Boyacá has one of the highest yields of sugar cane (Saccharum spp.) for panela production. However, producers constantly demand the evaluation of genetic material that could increase the yields per area and the agro-industrial characteristics of the traditional material of greater dominance in the region. In order to estimate cane and panela yields per hectare, cultivars CC 01-1940, CC 99-2282, CC 05-940, CC 03-469, CC 06-791 were evaluated experimentally in the municipality of Moniquirá, Boyacá. Subsequently, commercial milling tests were carried out with the best cultivar in Moniquirá and San José de Pare, Boyacá, together with the control materials from each zone, Caña Buena and RD 75-11, respectively. Experimentally, the cultivar CC 01-1940 stood out with a production of 183.3t/ha of sugarcane (TCH), 24.2 tons of panela per hectare (TPH), as well as a conversion of 13.2% of panela (CP). In a commercial milling test in San José de Pare, it was found that the cultivar CC 01-1940 had a production of 221.9 TCH and 26.1 TPH, surpassing by more than 30 tons of cane and 5.2 tons of panela, for what was reported by RD 75-11. For the municipality of Moniquirá, the cultivar CC 01-1940 obtained 158.5 TCH, 18.5 TPH and 11.6% CP, surpassing the cultivar Caña Buena.
