ABSTRACT

In this study 143 eye undergoing cataract extraction are divided into two categories in one group, (69 eyes), Quimotrase was used; in the other group the enzyme was not used. The same surgical technique was done in each group except that the lens was delivered by the sliding method in the first group and by the tumbling method in the latterThe complications in each group are classified, analysed and compared. In brief, during the surgery, complications were minimized with the use of Quimotrase. However, in the early postoperative period, there were more complications encountered when this enzyme was used. Moreover, Quimotrase was helpful in cases of immature cataract especially at the ages of 40 to 60. It was not of much use in the age group 80 to 90, and proved even harmful when the cataract was hypermature. (Summary)

ABSTRACT

This is a follow-up report on a modified ptosis procedure combining the merits of both the internal and external routes. The over-all rating of 92 success in this series appears to be better than in any series previously reported. The technique is discussed concisely, with emphasis in (1) the complete separation of the septum orbitale from the levator aponeurosis, (2) the care of the orbicularis during and after surgery, and (3) careful calculation of how much levator muscle to resect. This work bears out that sex and type of ptosis play an important role in the management of ptosis, more resection being required in females than in males and less resection in acquired ptosis than in congenital. The only complications to reckon with are lid edema, chemosis, and lagophthalmos; but these are only mild and not permanent. (Summary)

ABSTRACT

This survey of 374 patients, of which 47 underwent bilateral cataract surgery in one sitting and 42 in different sittings reveal that there is no differences in the incidence of complications following cataract extraction. The apparent slight discrepancies are more due to the inequality of patient reaction and variability of situations before surgery rather than from the unilaterality and bilaterality of surgery itselfThe advantages of simultaneous surgery to name a few, are (1) less mental trauma, (2) shorter hospitalization period, (3) less hospital and surgery expenses, (4) much wider field of vision and (5) earlier return to workThis study definitely disproves the contention that there are more complications when 2 eyes are done simultaneously than when the surgery is done with some time intervalIt may therefore, be safely concluded that bilateral cataract surgery may be done safely in one sitting if the proper presurgical and postoperative care are followed faithfully.
