ABSTRACT

Objective@#To explore the biological effects of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) with different high intensities on condylar cartilage in rats. @*Methods@#SD rats were randomly divided into a sham group (Sham) and an irradiation group (EMP1: 500 kV/m, 10 Hz; EMP2: 270 kV/m, 10 Hz). Then, they were sacrificed at 1 h, 3 h, 12 h, 24 h and 3 d after irradiation. The degree of cartilage degeneration was evaluated by HE, safranine O-fast green, type Ⅱ collagen immunohistochemistry and TUNEL staining. Immunohistochemistry and western blot were performed to detect the expression of the matrix degradation factors: matrix metalloproteinase-13 (MMP-13), a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs (ADAMTS-5) and the apoptosis key factor cleaved-cysteinyl aspartate specific proteinase (cleaved-Caspase3) in condylar cartilage. @*Results @#HE staining showed that, compared with the Sham group, a small amount of exfoliation was found on the fibrous surface layer of the cartilage after irradiation in the EMP1 and EMP2 groups. Compared with the Sham group, the percentage of safranine O-fast green-positive area decreased significantly at 12 h and 24 h (both P<0.01) in the EMP1 group and 12 h and 24 h in the EMP2 group (both P<0.05); the percentage of type Ⅱ collagen-positive area decreased significantly at 3 h and 12 h (P<0.05, P<0.001) in the EMP1 group. In addition, the number of TUNEL-positive apoptotic cells increased significantly at 1 h, 3 h, 12 h, and 24 h in the EMP1 group and 1 h, 3 h, and 12 h in the EMP2 group (P<0.05). Moreover, at different timepoints (except at 3 d) in the EMP1 group and EMP2 group, the percentage of MMP-13, ADAMTS-5- and cleaved Caspase3-positive chondrocytes and their protein levels in condylar cartilage increased significantly after irradiation (P<0.05). @* Conclusion@# EMP with a certain degree of high-intensity can induce early transient damage to condylar cartilage. This effect is dose-and time-dependent.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To understand the relationship between childhood psychological resilience and of school violence awareness in rural areas in southern Henan, and to provide support and reference for the prevention and control of school violence.@*Methods@#A total of 6 484 primary school children in grades 4-6 in the rural areas of Dengzhou, Xincai and Gushi counties in southern Henan were surveyed for psychological resilience and awareness on school violence.@*Results@#The average score of psychological resilience of grade 4-6 pupils in rural areas of southern Henan was (39.92±8.18), and the average score of school violence awareness was (60.78±6.19). In terms of age, gender, grade, school type, personality, class performance, academic performance, smoking, intimate friends, playing games, truancy, loitering outside the school, relationship with siblings, father s education, mother s education, parental conflict, parenting style, the proportion of primary school students in different level of school violence awareness varied statistically different (P<0.01). Multivariate Logistic regression showed, after controlling for confounding factors, psychological resilience was an independent influencing factor affecting awareness on school violence (OR=1.06, 95%CI=1.05-1.08), with better psychological resilience, being associated with higher school violence awareness (P<0.01).@*Conclusion@#The level of school violence awareness and psychological resilience of pupils in southern Henan is relatively low. The higher level of psychological resilience, the higher level of school violence awareness; psychological resilience might be improved through education and household parenting modification to prevent and reduce the incidence of violence on campus.

ABSTRACT

Deep Candida infections commonly occur in immunosuppressed patients. A rare case of a multiple deep organ infection with Candida albicans and spinal tuberculosis was reported in a healthy young man. The 19-year-old man complained of month-long fever and lower back pain. He also had a history of scalded mouth syndrome. Coinfection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Candida albicans was diagnosed using the culture of aspirates from different regions. Symptoms improved considerably after antifungal and antituberculous therapy. This case illustrates that infection with tuberculosis might impair the host's immune system and increase the risk of invasive candidiasis in an immunocompetent patient.


As infecções profundas por Candida ocorrem geralmente em pacientes imunossuprimidos. Relatamos caso raro de infecções profundas em múltiplos órgãos por Candida albicans e neuro tuberculose em homem jovem saudável. Um jovem de 19 anos de idade queixou-se de febre e lombalgia há um mês. Relatava ainda histórico de síndrome da boca escaldada. Foi diagnosticada co-infecção por Mycobacterium tuberculosis e Candida albicans em cultura do aspirado de diferentes regiões do organismo. Os sintomas melhoraram significativamente após a terapia antifúngica e antituberculosa. Este caso é apresentado para mostrar que a tuberculose pode prejudicar o sistema imune do hospedeiro e aumentar o risco de candidíase invasiva em paciente imunocompetente.
