ABSTRACT

Se realizó un estudio descriptivo donde se revisaron las historias clínicas de 22 adultos con cuadro de diarrea aguda causado por rotavirus (diagnosticado por la prueba de látex con fijación de complemento). Las edades de los pacientes estuvieron entre los 15 a 75 años (promedio de 39 años), el 100 por ciento cursó con diarrea, 86 por ciento vómitos, 77 por ciento fiebre y 64 por ciento con algún grado de deshidratación; 28 por ciento con más de 100 leucocitos por campo, 22,7 por ciento presentaron sangre en heces; 59 por ciento fueron internados con un promedio de días hospitalizados de 4,4 días (rango 1 a 8 días). El coprocultivo fue negativo en 86 por ciento, recibiendo antibioticoterapia 18,2 por ciento de pacientes. Todos los casos se presentaron durante el período de enero a marzo.


A descriptive study was performed, in which the clinical records of 22 adult patients with acute diarrhea caused by Rotavirus infection (diagnosed using the latex test with complement fixation) were reviewed. Patients were between 15 to 75 years old (mean age: 39 years), 100 per cent had diarrhea, 86 per cent vomiting, 77 per cent fever, and 64 per cent had any degree of dehydration; 28 per cent patients had more than 100 leukocytes per high power field in stool examination, 22,7 per cent had blood in their stools, and 59 per cent were hospitalized; the average hospitalization time was 4,4 days (range: 1 to 8 days). Stool cultures were negative in 86 per cent patients, and 18,2 per cent received antimicrobial therapy. All cases presented to the clinic during the January to March period.
