ABSTRACT

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) is a severe and rare eruption that develops mostly from factors related to drugs. It is characterized by a fever and a pustular eruption on the erythematous skin with an acute onset and without follicular localization. Etiopathogenesis has not yet been fully explained. Although it is similar to pustular psoriasis, its clinical, historical and histopathological characteristics are different. In this article, we present a case of AGEP associated with tigecycline that developed in a patient followed up in the intensive care unit for three months with an intra-abdominal injury after a trauma and Acinetobacter baumannii infection.

ABSTRACT

To determine the seroprevalence of hepatitis A virus among children aged 1-18 years in Elazig before national hepatitis A virus immunization program in Turkey. Prospective study. Elazig Education and Research Hospital and Elazig Harput State Hospital in Eastern Anatolia, Turkey. 1258 patients admitted to pediatric polyclinic with suspicion of hepatitis A virus infection between January 2011 and December 2012 were included in the study. ELISA blood test. Serological markers of hepatitis A, anti-HAV IgM and anti-HAV IgG, were tested using the ELISA method. Two hundred and forty-eight patients who were Anti-HAV IgM positive were excluded from study. The mean age of the remaining 1010 pediatric patients was 10.7 +/- 5.1 years [range: 1-18 years]. Out of these, 558 [55.2%] were male and 452 [44.8%] female. Overall, 575 [56.9%] cases were seronegative against hepatitis A virus. Anti-HAV IgG was detected in435 patients [43.1%]. Out of these, 236 [54.3%] were male and 199 [45.7%] female. The mean age of seropositive cases was 11.7 +/- 5.2 years. Hepatitis A is an important public health problem in our region. This study has revealed an advanced age of exposure to hepatitis A virus infection. We argue that the application of routine hepatitis A vaccine to children in our region will reduce the potential severe complications of the infection

ABSTRACT

Skeletal system involvement is relatively a common complication of human brucellosis, however, muscular involvement and psoas abscess are less frequent. Psoas abscess is a rare clinical situation which if not considered the diagnosis is very difficult. Ultrasonography and computed tomography of abdomen are used for the diagnosis. Combination of antibiotic treatment and drainage are recommended in the management of psoas abscess. We report a case of 45 years old patient with severe hip pain with an abscess in the psoas muscle which was diagnosed with CT Scan. The patient was successfully treated with triple antibiotic regimen and percutaneous abscess drainage

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the effect of trace elements in patients with Helicobacter pylori associated chronic gastritis. Prospective study. Clinical services of the clinical microbiology and infectious diseases and gastroenterology clinics at Dicle University, Turkey A total of 92 patients with variable severity of chronic gastritis [45 Helicobacter pylori positive and 47 Helicobacter pylori negative gastritis] and 90 age and sex matched healthy subjects were included in the study conducted between October 2006 and November 2008. Histopathologic examination, culture of Helicobacter pylori and urease tests were performed for each patient. The atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used in the measurement of trace elements in the serum. Serum copper and zinc levels were significantly elevated in patients with Helicobacter pylori associated gastritis compared to Helicobacter pylori negative gastritis and healthy controls [p < 0.0001]. Serum copper, zinc and Cu / Zn levels in patients with Helicobacter pylori negative chronic gastritis was not significantly different from the serum levels in healthy controls [p > 0.05]. Our results suggest a relationship between Helicobacter pylori associated chronic gastritis and the elevation of trace element levels in serum. This study confirms that the elevation of trace element levels in serum [Cu and Zn levels] will be helpful in the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori associated chronic gastritis in the abscence of invasive procedures, and is useful in predicting the severity of infection in patients with chronic gastritis
