ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the EMG activity at maximal occlusal clenching of masseter and anterior temporal muscles in a sample of 16 Class II malocclusion asymptomatic subjects, with mean age of 17 years and four month. The subjects were neuromuscularly deprogrammed with the use of occlusal splints during a mean period of nine month 26 days. The EMG activity at maximal clenching for the masseter (MD: z=3,36, p=0,001; ME: z=-2,74, p=0,006) and anterior temporal (TD:z=-2,49, p=0,013; TE: z=3,516, p< 0,001) muscles. A positive correlation was observed between the right and left sides of the masseter in the before (rs =0,750; p< 0,001) and after (rs=0574; p< 0,020) the use of the splint. For the anterior temporal muscle, this correlation occurred only before (rs=0,868; p< 0,001) the observation period. The data also showed that the anterior temporal muscle presented higher EMG activity when compared to the masseter before and after deprogramming at maximal occlusal clenching.

ABSTRACT

ME: 3,511/4V, TD: 3,621/4V,TE: 4,221/4v) demonstraram redução significante (MD, p=0,015; ME , p=0,030; TD, p=0.002; TE, p=0,013).

The purpose this study was to evaluate the EMG activity of anterior temporal and masseter muscles in a sample of 16 Angle Cl II malocclusion asymptomatic subjects, average age of 17y and 4m. The subjects were neuromusculary deprogrammed with teh use of occlusal splints during a mean period of 9m 26d. The EMG activities were registered for all subjects before and after the neuromuscular deprogramming. The EMG records were performed by surface bipolars electrodes and measured by calculating the root mean square (RMS), and were expressed in microvolts (1/4V). The activity index was calculated in terms od pecentage. The results showed significant reduction of the EMG activity at mandibular rest position for the anterior temporal and masseter muscles ((MD, p=0,015; ME , p=0,030; TD, p=0.002; TE, p=0,013). A positive correlation was observed at rest between the right and left sides of the masseter after the use of the aplint (rs=0,903; p<0.001). For the anterior temporal muscle, this correlation was observed both before (rs=0,526p; <0,001) and after (rs=0,747; p<0,001) the observation period, the latter presenting a more marked correlation. The data also showed that the anterior temporal muscle presented higher EMG activity when compared to the masseter before and after deprogramming at mandibular rest position.

ABSTRACT

Ten healthy volunteers with age of 18 to 25 years, using belt inflate (Ehob-Air-Aligns) (CC) and not using beit (SC). participated in this study. Surface electrodes were used for the acquisition of the signs of the rectus abdominis, oblique external of the abdomen, rectus femuris, biceps of the thigh (long head) and erectus espinae muscles on the right side. These electrodes were placed on the muscle and connected in a electromyography of four channels. The electric signs of the muscles were converted from analogical to digital (A/D), filtered (200 Hz - 2000 Hz) to eliminate interferences of mechanical origin and electric noises" The electromyographic data was registered and analysed by a software (AQDados-Lynx). To (Quantify the electromyographic registrations, data was rectiried, integrated and thereafter statistical analysis was accomplisbed. For identification of the beginning and end of the lifting of the load (25 of the corporal weight, elevated starting from the level of the ground), and in order to synchronize with the electromyographic registrations cinematographic controls were accomplished. The following positions of the joint were also considered in the beginning of the movement: extended knee and extended trunk - JETE (EKET) - and extended knee and trunk flexioned - JETF (EKTF). After the results were obtained, this study concludes: The muscles biceps femuris (caput longun), rectus abdominis, erectus espinae and obliquos externus abdominis were the muscles which presented higher electromyography activity independently of the posture, and decreased electromyography activity occured in this posture when belt is used.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Summary: The traditional teaching system, with a sole term evaluation test, is checked against a method consisting of frequent testing, during a Neuroanatomy course. The statistic comparison of the mean grades for bath methods showed a significant difference in favor of the continued evaluation system. The possible factors that might have made successful the use of this method and the feed-back provided by the students are discussed. Additionally, the authors suggest some procedures for controlling the validity of the method appraised herein.
