ABSTRACT

Lepidium sativum (LS) is an annual plant that has been used for the treatment of many ailments. The ethanol extracts of pinnately-lobed (PL), pinnately-compound (PC), and pinnately-veined (PV) leaves of LS were examined for their total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, and their phenolic acid (namely caffeic acid (CA), p-coumaric acid (PA), and ferulic acid (FA)) contents were determined using reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array (HPLC/PDA) analysis. Among the three leaf types, the highest average total polyphenol content was found in PV (79.87 mg GAE/g extract), whereas PC showed the highest average total flavonoid content (53.35 mg QE/g extract). According to the HPLC/PDA results, PV exhibited a high amount of CA (78.60 µg/g extract) and FA (1,722.85 µg/g extract), whereas a high content of PA (258.72 µg/g extract) was detected in PC. Higher amounts of the phytochemical compounds PV and PC might be indicative of their superior biological activities compared to PL. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to quantify and compare the total polyphenol, flavonoid, and phenolic acid contents in three different leaf types of LS.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#The aim of this study was to develop a Korean version of the Thinking About Life Experiences (TALE-K) scale and to analyze the characteristics of autobiographical memory function (AMF) in community-dwelling older adults. @*Methods@#To develop TALE-K, a translation and back-translation procedure followed by an understanding test was performed. Then, a survey was conducted to examine the associations of AMF with psychosocial variables using TALE-K, Index of Well-Being (IWB), Meaning in Life Scale for older adults, Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale, Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey, and Brief Resilience Scale. @*Results@#Data from 75 community-dwelling older adults were used for the final analysis. The average scores of all three sub-scales of TALE-K were below 3 points (less frequent than occasionally). The correlation results showed that TALE-K total score was significantly associated with IWB and the Meaning in life scale for older adults. The multiple linear regression results present-ed that higher AMF was significantly associated with higher IWB, along with having siblings, higher meaning in life and resilience, and lower loneliness. @*Conclusion@#Including a validation study of TALE-K, studies for understanding the characteristics of AMF in older adults using TALE-K are needed.

ABSTRACT

Massive ovarian edema is a rare tumor-like condition occurring in young women; it involves enlargement of the ovary, caused by intermittent torsion of the mesovarium. Ultrasonographically, a well-defined inhomogeneous soft tissue mass lesion is seen, and this cannot be distinguished from other solid ovarian tumors. The MRI findings, seen on T1WI, are inhomogeneous high signal intensity of the central part, with peripheral low signal intensity of the mass lesion. On T2WI, the inner part of the mass shows high signal intensity and the peripheral part, low signal intensity. Ovarian follicles are arranged peripherally, and are seen as low signal intensity on T1WI, and high signal intensity on T2WI. These MR findings are specific for the diagnosis of massive ovarian edema.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the plain radiographic and CT findings of the necrotizing fasciitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the radiologic findings of 4 cases with necrotizing fasciitis. Three cases were proven pathologically. We evaluated pattern and extent of the gas shadows in plain films. CT findings were analysed, with emphasis on : (a) gas pattern, (b) extent, (c) location and involved site, (d) associated focal abscess, and (e) swelling of the adjacent muscles. RESULTS: On plain radiographs, four cases showed streaky or mottled gas densities in the pelvis, three cases in the perineum, one case in the abdomen, and two cases in the thigh. On CT images, gas pattern was mottled and streaky appearance with swelling of the adjacent muscles. Gasshadows located in the extraperitoneal space in four cases, fascial layer in four cases, and subcutaneous layer infour cases. There were gas shadows in pelvic wall, perineum, abdominal wall, buttock, thigh, and scrotum. Focallow density lesion suggestive of focal abscess was not visualized. CONCLUSION: Plain radiography is useful forearly diagnosis of the necrotizing fasciitis and CT is very useful for detection of precise location and extent of the disease. CT is also useful for differentiation of necrotizing fasciitis from focal abscess and cellulitis.

ABSTRACT

We report a case of multicystic mesothelioma in the visceral peritoneum anterior of the ascending colon. A 39-year-old female patient visited hospital with a palpabel tender mass in the right flank. An ultrasonogram showed multiple cystic mass lesions in the right flank and CT scan showed a multicystic rative mass with enhancing wall and septum in front of the ascending colon. The patient underwent explolaparotomy and the mass. which inpathology turned out to be a benign multicystic masothelioma, was removed.
