ABSTRACT

Recently phacoemulsification with about 3mm small incision and implantation of foldable silicone intraocular lens (IOL) has been widely used. We performed this study to determine the changes of central corneal endothelium with time after surgery and the effect of the surgical skill and age of patient on endothelial cell loss(ECL). We evaluated 198 patients(198 eyes). The patients was randomly divided into expert(E) and biginner(B) group. The non-contact specular microscopy was performed at preoperative and postoperative 1 week, 1 month, 2 months and 3 months and ECL(%) was calculated. Mean ECL of E group was lower than that of B group. The differencewas statistically significant in the patients younger than 60 years(p<0.05). In E group, mean ECL of postoperative 1 week was higher than that of 1 month. However, the mean ECL of B group at postoperative 1 week was lower than that of 1 month. It was statistically significant in patients younger than 60 years(p<0.05). The patients older than 60 years showed higher ECL than young group. It was statistically significant at postoperative 1 week and 3 months in E gorups(p<0.05). From these results, we conclude that the changes of central corneal endothelial cell count after small incision cataract surgery are different according to the skill of surgeon and the age of patient.

ABSTRACT

VDT syndrome has been understood as the outocme of the computerized socio-economic cultures in this modern age. It affects many workers on larious visual functions as well as affecting some general health conditions including neurologic, circulatory, and musculosckeletal system. We conducted series of investigations to evaluate the influence of VDT work on the physiologic functions using objective ocular examinations on VDT workers with non-VDT workers as controls. Prolongation of near point decreased accommodation amplitude, myopic shift of refractive condition, and decreased amout of tear formation were significantly indicative in the VDT workers' group. The above functional disturbances can significahtly, deteriorate not only working effeciency but general physical condition if appropriate measures are not provided quickly. Therefore, it is firmly suggested that a comprehensive epidemiological study should be implemented aimed at ImprovIng working situations for VDT workers.

ABSTRACT

We studied clinically 33 in patients(48 eyes) of windshield ocular injuries among 72 in patients who had ocular injuries by traffic accidents and underwent surgical treatment in Department of Ophthalmology of Han Gang Sacred Heart Hospital from 1. Jan, 1980 to 31. July, 1987. The results of analysis were as follows: 1. The incidence of windshield ocular injuries was 45.8% of all the ocular injuries caused by traffic accident. 2. The incidence was more common in male(81.9%) and in the age of 4th decades(39.4%). 3. The incidence of bilateral ocular injuries was 45.3%. 4. The ocular injuries were more common in front right seats(54.5%) than driver's seats(45.5%). 5. Eyebll injuries occured in 77.1% and among them, corneoscleral laceration was most common. 6. There was no significant statiscal value of final visual acuity between laceration involvin the cornea only and laceration involving the cornea and anterior sclera. 7. Final V.A less than 0.1 was 43.7% and the most common cause of visual impairment was corneal opacity.

ABSTRACT

Choristoma are tissue masses normally not present at the involved site and can be classified into 4 groups, epidermoid cyst, dermoid cyst, teratoma and ectopic lacrimal gland. Ectopic lacrimal gland is an unusual congenital and developmental abnormality and may be associated with other choristomatous tissues as muscle, nerve, cartilage or various dermal appendages. We have recently experienced a case of ectopic lacrimal gland associated with muscle, fat, nerve, tissue in the lateral side of bulbar conjunctiva in the right eye of a 23 year-old korean girl.
