ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study is to identify the effect of detraining on lipoprotein and body composition after 8 week calorie restriction and different level of aerobic exercise among obese middle-aged women. METHODS: The 30 middle-aged women whose body fat were over 30% were randomly allocated into three groups of control, exercise group of 40% VO2max level, and exercise group of 60% VO2max level. All the participants were taught to record their calorie intake and restrict daily 500kcal intake. After eight-week exercise and daily 500kcal restriction, their body compositions and blood lipid levels were measured again. RESULTS: The weight, BMI, body fat, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL-cholesterol levels showed significant decreases after eight-week exercise and calorie restriction in the two exercise groups. However, detraining tended to increase them again after detraining of 4 weeks, and even more after 8 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: Detrainging after calorie restriction and exercise tended to increase levels of indices for body composition and lipoprotein among obese middle-aged women.

ABSTRACT

We report a rare case of tension pneumocephalus after eyebrow surgery for the treatment of a saccular aneurysm at posterior communicating artery. The patient's consciousness was suddenly aggravated due to the tension pneumocephalus on fifth postoperative day, which was treated by repairing the frontal sinus. The patient was recovered completely and uneventfully after this revision surgery.

ABSTRACT

We retrospectively reviewed 100 consecutive patients who were ruptured intracranial aneurysm and were operated on in the department of neurosurgery of Wallace Memorial Baptist Hospital from August 1984 to August 1988. The patients who were operated upon within the first 3 days of their most recent subarachnoid hemorrhage formed the early group, the patients operated upon with 4-7 days formed the intermediate group, after 8 days were considered as the delayed group. Early operation was performed in 30 patients, intermediate operation in 20 patients, and delayed operation in 50 patients. On the base of their clinical outcome, the patients were allocated to one of 4 outcome categories(good, fair, poor, death) at the time of their hospital discharge. The 80% favorable outcome estimated from early operation and 85% from intermediate operation and 90% from delayed operation. The mortality was estimated 13% from early operation and 0% from intermediate operation and 8% from the delayed operation. Each 4 cases of early, intermediate and delayed operation was needed shunt operation for hydrocephalus. In operative result, after 1987 was better than before 1987. In hypertensive patients, there was a tendency to observe poor prognosis than normotensive patients, especially with vasospasm.

ABSTRACT

The authors report the clinical features, radiologic findings and the operative management of three patients with tentorial free edge meningioma. The frequent symptoms and signs were headache, facial pain, tinnitus, dizziness, increased intracranial pressure and cranial nerves deficits. Tentorial free edge meningiomas are not only very rare but also very difficulty in total removal without complications. In this presentation, we are discussed the nature of this tumor and operative technique with review of literature.

ABSTRACT

Xanthogranulnmatous pyelonephritis is an unusual chronic renal infection associated with renal calculi, urinary tract infection or obstruction in many cases. It is characterized by orange-yellow nodules of inflamed parenchymal tissue macroscopically and foamy lipid-laden histiocyte microscopically. We report a case of Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis in a 74 years old male.
