ABSTRACT

Background: The attainment of quality services in a laboratory requires a comprehensive quality assurance programme which includes both internal and external quality control. External Quality Assessment Scheme (EQAS) programmes are accepted around the world as invaluable tools by laboratories to assess the performance of their testing systems. Results are objectively compared to other laboratories, using the same methodologies for every parameter. The goal of this study was to review EQAS results from time to time in an effort to improve the performance of the laboratory. Methods: Observational study done at Pramukhswami medical college, Shree Krishna hospital, Karamsad from January 2009 to December 2013. In the present study we have evaluated our EQAS test result of the past five years, from 2009 to 2013. We receive two samples in duplicate in lyophilised form, which are stored at 2-8°C in the refrigerator. The samples are reconstituted with 1 ml of distilled water at the time of procedure. The samples are received quarterly in a year. The test results of all the samples are analysed and documented. Results: Satisfactory results were obtained in all the cycles except four times. Discrepancy was observed in Prothrombin time INR (International Standardized Ratio). Root cause analysis was performed and necessary action taken. Conclusion: This participation in EQAS over the last five years has helped us significantly to improve our laboratory services in terms of performance evaluation, patient care and overall quality of laboratory practices.

ABSTRACT

A simple, rapid, precise, and economical spectrophotometric method has been developed for quantitative analysis of Raltegravir Potassium (RALP) in tablet formulations. The stock solution of RALP was prepared in water. The standard solution of RALP in water showed absorption maxima at 331.6 nm. The drug obeyed Beer–Lambert’s law in the concentration range of 1–100 μg/mL with coefficient of correlation (R2) was 0.9999. It showed coefficient of variation below 2 % in intra-run and inter-run precision. The recovery was obtained with values close to the 100 % of theoretical at three different concentrations. The results of analysis have been validated as per ICH guidelines. The method can be adopted in routine analysis of RALP in bulk and tablet dosage form and it involves water as a solvent and no complex extraction techniques.

ABSTRACT

Schwannian stroma poor calcified bilateral neuroblastoma of adrenal gland in 14 year old male patient is an exceptionally uncommon, malignant tumor that is derived from the primitive neural crest cells of the adrenal medulla. Neuroblastoma is the fourth most common malignancy of childhood up to five years of age, and very occasionally seen after that. It rarely occurs in the adrenal gland after ten years of age and bilaterally. The diagnosis was established based on clinical, radiological, histopathological and immunohistochemical features. At present, the patient is on chemotherapy and radiotherapy but the recent MRI is showing bilateral pubic bone and femur metastasis. Conclusion: Schwannian stroma poor calcified bilateral neuroblastoma of adrenal gland is a rare tumor at the age of 14 years which needs precise histopathological assessment and confirmation by Immunohistochemistry.

ABSTRACT

In the present study methanolic and ethyl acetate extracts of Argemone mexicana whole plant (Papaveraceae) were tested orally in swiss albino mice at doses of 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg b.w. for CNS related activities. Papaveraceae family is known to have CNS depressant activity, so A. mexicana was evaluated for CNS activities. Significant central and peripheral nociceptive activity was observed for both extracts. Methanolic and ethyl acetate extract have also showed significant decrease in motor activity and fall off time of animals on rotating rod, along with sedative effect by potentiating phenobarbitone-induced sleeping time. In the acute toxicity study, both extracts was found to be safe upto 2500 mg/kg b.w. These results suggested that methanolic and ethyl acetate extracts of Argemone mexicana show analgesic, anxiolytic and sedative effects.
