ABSTRACT

To determine the level of physical activity (LPA) of students from the city of Teresina-PI and test the association with body mass index (BMI) and fat percentage (BF%). In a transversal study with randomized and representative sample, we evaluated 383 students (190 boys and 193 girls) with a mean age of 14.0 ± 0.9 years enrolled in public schools in Teresina. A lifestyle questionnaire was administered and LPA, BMI and% BF was obtained. Statistical analysis used the t test, chisquare test and Spearman correlation (p <0.05). Among males 21.5% were sedentary, 24.2% were insufficiently active, 2.6% were obese and 8.4% overweight. Among females 32.1% were sedentary, 9.3% were insufficiently active, 1.5% were obese and 13.9% overweight. Negative correlations were found between PAL and % BF (r = -0.115, p = 0.025), regardless of sex. The female students had higher rates of physical inactivity. Moreover, negative correlations were found between LPA and % BF for adolescents.
