ABSTRACT

La actualización del conocimiento de las Coniferas de Guatemala comprende 57 especies de plantas, de las cuales 28 especies son nativas y 29 son exóticas, agrupadas en diferentes familias, una de ellas, la familia Zamiaceae, que es un grupo de plantas parecidas a las palmas y que se estudiaron a través del Proyecto Universitario de Investigación en Ciencias Básicas PUICB.057 Actualización de la flora de Guatemala, capítulo I Pinophyta. Se colectaron y georeferenciaron ejemplares de las distintas especies que conforman las Zamiáceas, ello permitió preparar mapas de distribución de las especies nativas, incluidas en los géneros Ceratozamia (1 especie) y Zamia (4 especies) además se documentaron especies exóticas como Dioon mejiae y Zamia furfuraceae, empleadas como ornamentales...

ABSTRACT

The medical records of ten pediatric patients with a clinical diagnosis of tetanus were reviewed retrospectively. The heart rate and blood pressure of all tetanus patients were measured noninvasively every hour during the first two weeks of hospitalization. Six of ten tetanus patients presented clinical evidence of sympathetic hyperactivity (group A) and were compared with a control group consisting of four children who required mechanical ventilation for diseases other than tetanus (group B). Heart rate and blood pressure simultaneously and progressively increased to a maximum by day 7. The increase over baseline was 43.70 + or - 11.77 bpm (mean + or - SD) for heart rate (P<0.01) and 38.60 + or - 26.40 mmHg for blood pressure (P<0.01). These values were higher and significantly different from those of the control group (group B) at day 6, which had an average heart rate increase over baseline of 19.35 + or - bpm (P<0.05) and blood pressure of 10.24 + or - mmHg (P<0.05). By the end of the second week of hospitalization, in group A the increase of systolic blood pressure over baseline had diminished to 9.60 + or - mmHg (P<0.05), but the heart rate continued to be elevated (27.80 + or - 0 bpm, P = NS), when compared to day 7 maximal values. The dissociation of these two cardiovascular variables at the end of the second week of hospitalization suggests the presence of asymmetric cardiac and vascular sympathetic control. One possible explanation for these observations is a selective and delayed action of tetanus toxin on the inhibitory neurons which control sympathetic outflow to the heart

ABSTRACT

We studied the role of CD4+, CD8+, CD4- CD8- T cells and IgG anti-Leishmania after infection or vaccination in the CBA/ca mouse. Mice were either infected with L. m. mexicana promastigotes or vaccinated with parasite-membrane antigens incorporated into liposomes. Successfully vaccinated mice were used as cell-donors in adoptive transfer experiments. Naive, syngeneic recipients received highly-enriched CD4+, CD8+ or CD4- CD8- T cells from those two set of donors and challenged with live parasites. Our results showed that, both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells from infected or vaccinated donors conferred significant disease-resistance to naive recipients. In addition, adoptive transfer of CD4- CD8- T cells from vaccinated donors significantly delayed lesion growth in recipient mice. We concluded that vaccination of CBA mice correlates with the induction of protective CD4+, CD8+ and CD4- CD8- T cells and the synthesis of IgG anti-Leishmania.

ABSTRACT

La presente comunicación, es una revisión actualizada de la literatura médica sobre la histiocitosis de células de Langerhans, anteriormente llamada histiocitosis X. Se presenta además un caso de ella, tratado en nuestro Servicio, caso que fue diagnosticado como histiocitosis de Células de langerhans (LCH), variedad de letterer Siwe. Con ocasión de esta revisión se hacen algunas consideraciones estadísticas de la LCH en el Hospital de niños Baca Ortiz en los últimos 8 años y se propone la colaboración para recolectar casos e incorporarlos al protocolo de tratamiento propuesto por la Sociedad Internacional de la Histiocitosis de Células de langerhans, comunicándose con los autores.
