La tuberculosis continúa siendo un problema de salud pública, se ha producido una reemergencia de esta patología, especialmente después de la epidemia de Síndrome de Inmunodeficiencia Adquirida (SIDA). Se estima que un tercio de la población mundial porta el bacilo de Koch en forma latente, se originan más de 8 millones de casos nuevos por año, de los cuales 800.000 son niños. De 600.000 niños muertos por SIDA en el mundo, 200.000 estaban coinfectados con bacilo de Koch Los adolescentes y niños con infección por el Virus de la Inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH) presentan mayor incidencia de enfermedad tuberculosa. Por consiguiente, se debe evaluar infección por VIH en todas las personas enfermas con tuberculosis. La clínica y la radiología de la enfermedad tuberculosa en adolescentes y niños con infección por el VIH son bastante similares a la de los niños inmunocompetentes, aunque tienden a ser más graves, raras y pueden incluir compromiso extrapulmonar de múltiples órganos.
