ABSTRACT

@#Objective ( ) To investigate the association between urinary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PAHs metabolites - Methods and high normal blood pressure in coke oven workers. A total of 433 coke oven workers were selected as the study - subjects using convenient sampling method. They were divided into normal blood pressure group and high normal blood pressure group according to their blood pressure level. The levels of ten kinds of urinary hydroxylated PAHs metabolites were measured by - Results - high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. Among the subjects,57.5% had high normal blood - , - , - pressure. The levels of 1 hydroxynathalene 2 hydroxyphenanthrene 1 hydroxyphenanthrene and the metabolite of total PAHs - ( P ) in the high normal blood pressure group were higher than those in the normal blood pressure group all <0.05 . The results of - , - , - , the multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that urinary 1 hydroxynathalene 2 hydroxyfluorene 3 hydroxychrysene - ( P ), and metabolite of total PAHs were all risk factors for high normal blood pressure in coke oven workers all <0.05 after , , , , , adjusting for confounding factors such as gender length of service body mass index smoking index alcohol consumption tea , , , Conclusion consumption night shift exercise frequency and other PAHs metabolites. Exposure to PAHs in coke oven plants may increase the risk of elevated blood pressure within the normal range among coke oven workers.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the correlation of platelets-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) with neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) from pretreatment in the Xinjiang Uygur patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods In this retrospective analysis,96 cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients with pathologically diagnosis were collected.Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis suggested that optimum PLR and NLR cut-off point for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The patients were divided into high-PLR and low-PLR groups,high-NLR and low-NLR groups, respectively. The survival rate was calculated with Kaplan-Meier method. The Log rank statistics was used to test differences between groups. The prognostic factors that may affect patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Uighur population of Xinjiang were analyzed by COX proportional hazards models. Results For high-PLR and low-PLR groups,5-year overall survival, and progression-free survival were 46.6% and 79.3%,49.8% and 82.7%,respectively;the difference was statistically significant (all P < 0.01).For high-NLR and low-NLR groups,5-year overall survival rate, and progression-free survival rate were 41.3% and 41.3%,50.8% and 82.5%,respectively;the difference was statistically significant (all P < 0.01).Univariate analysis showed that N stage, clinical stage,NLR,and PLR had significantly impact on overall survival and progression-free survival (all P < 0.05);multivariate analysis showed that PLR and clinical stage had statistical significance in Uighur patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma for progression-free survival and overall survival (all P < 0.05).Conclusions PLR may be independent factor that influences the prognosis of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Uighur population of Xinjiang.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the effect of Salvia miltiorrhiza on diabetic retinopathy (DR).@*METHODS@#Diabetic mice of natural incidence type with monogenic inheritance were selected. Alloxan was injected into the caudal vein of mice once to induce DR. The structural changes of retina tissue in normal mice, DR mice and mice with high, medium and low dose of Salvia miltiorrhiza injection were observed under microscope. Then the blood glucose concentration and malonaldehyde (MDA) content were detected.@*RESULTS@#There were some microaneurysms in retina of DR group, number of gangliocyte was decreased significantly, and cells were sparse and in disorder. After modeling, the blood glucose level of high-dose Salvia miltiorrhiza group (SM III group) was significantly different from DR group (P<0.01). Till the tenth week, the blood glucose level of all SM groups was decreased significantly compared with DR group (P<0.01). The effective rates of three SM groups were 93.8%, 76.4% and 50.3%, respectively. After ten weeks, MDA content of DR group was significantly higher than those of the normal control group and SM group (P<0.01), and medium and low dose SM groups had significantly higher MDA than that of normal control group (P<0.01).@*CONCLUSIONS@#Salvia miltiorrhiza had certain protective effect on DR mice through the blood-ocular barrier.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the efficacy and prognostic factors of personalized treatment for breast cancer patients who failed chemotherapy.

METHODSSeventy-two patients with breast cancer who failed chemotherapy were treated at the Tumor Hospital of Harbin Medical University from January 2001 to January 2012. Among them, 42 cases received 5.6 cycles (range, 4-8 cycles) of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy, and 30 cases received 12.2 cycles (range, 6-22 cycles), both postoperative adjuvant and salvage chemotherapy. All of the 72 patients of stage IV were given personalized treatment. Under guidance of the principle that multidisciplinary treatment improves control rate but does not or less damage the normal tissues and host immune function, precise radiotherapy combined with Chinese herbal medicine (CHM), biological agent and others were chosen for the patients.

RESULTSThe median survival time was 20 months. Univariate analysis showed that non-invasive ductal carcinoma, less metastasized organs, without brain, liver and lung metastasis, Karnofsky performance scores ≥ 80, not combined with chemotherapy, and multiple courses of Chinese herbal medicine and biolojical agent treatment had significant impact on survival (P < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that no brain metastasis, non-invasive ductal carcinoma, and Chinese herbal medicine and biological agent treatment ≥ 7 courses and not combined with chemotherapy had obvious significance (P < 0.05). The rate of grade 3 and 4 treatment-related hematological toxicity was 8.3% (6/72) and 5.6% (4/72), respectively. All the patients with grade 4 hematological toxicity were the cases of grade 3 at hospital admission. No grade 3 and 4 acute radiation damages of the lung and liver were noticed.

CONCLUSIONChinese herbal medicine combined with biological agents and others prolongs survival time in breast cancer patients who failed chemotherapy, and provides an alternative treatment modality for them.
