ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Nowadays, checkbite methods and a digital sensor are used to analyze the movement of mandible. However, there are no study comparing two methods. Therefore, this study has compared measuring the condylar inclination methods by using the new ARCUSdigma 2 system and the checkbite method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Young 20 adults without any orthodontic treatment experiences, missing teeth, and restorations with the change of occlusal plane were tested. Angles of condylar path were measured 3 times each, based on Camper's line, by using two methods. KaVo PROTAR Evo 7 semi-adjustable articulator was used and the data were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: The anterior sagittal condylar inclination by ARCUSdigma 2 system were measured as 26.97degrees(+/-7.38degrees) on the left side and 29.80degrees(+/-8.19degrees) on the right side. The lateral condylar inclination were measured as 5.75degrees(+/-3.47degrees) on the left side and 8.10degrees(+/-4.98degrees) on the right side. 2. The anterior sagittal condylar inclination by checkbite method were measured as 25.20degrees(+/-6.53degrees) on the left side and 28.18degrees(+/-7.38degrees) on the right side. The lateral condylar inclination were measured as 10.97degrees(+/-5.63degrees) on the left side and 12.03degrees(+/-5.22degrees) on the right side. There was no statistically significant difference between male and female (P>.05). 3. The lateral condylar inclinations of ARCUSdigma 2 were statistically significantly smaller than that of checkbite method (P.05). However, the lateral condylar inclinations of ARCUSdigma 2 were statistically significantly smaller than that of checkbite method (P<.05).

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Although immunohistochemically detectable metallothionein (MT) overexpression has been described in proliferation epithelial tumor cells, the clinical significance of the expression remains to be elucidated. Therefore, the present article is focused on evaluating the possible significance of MT expression in colonic adenocarcinoma and its relationship with p53 overexpression, Topoisomerase II-alpha as new cell proliferating marker and apoptosis. METHODS: The following formalin-fixed paraffin embedded surgical or biopsied samples were immunohistochemically stained for MT, p53 and topoisomerase II-alpha, and performed in situ TUNEL method for evaluation of apoptotic cell ; normal control mucosa (78 cases), tubular adenomas (20 cases) and adenocarcinomas with various degree of differentiation (78 cases). RESULTS: The MT immunohistochmical reactivity was decreased in colonic adenocarcinoma than that of normal glandular epithelial and tubular adenoma, with the frequency of MT expression in colonic adenocarcinoma depending upon tumor differentiation only. But the frequency of p53 expression was correlated with T-stage, lymph node metastasis and clinical staging, while topoisomerase II-alpha expression and apoptosis in colonic adenocarcinoma were correlated with lymph node metastasis and clinical staging. The immunohistochemical expression of MT and p53 expression in colonic adenocarcinoma was inversely correlated. Also, the inverse correlation between MT expression and expression of toposiomerase II-alpha indices and apoptotic indices were noted. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that MT expression may play a role in proliferative activity and apoptosis in colonic adenocarcinoma. Although MT expression is correlated to tumor differentiation, further studies of a possibility of prognostic factor, such as p53, are required for the determination of significant relationships in other clinicinopathologic indices.

ABSTRACT

Among the 85 cases of prosthetic replacement of femoral neck fracture which had been operated at Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Korea Veterans Hospital from January, 1982 to May, 1990, 32 cases (15 unipolar hemiarthroplasty and 17 bipolar hemiarthroplasty) were examined clinically and radiologically at an average 7.7 years postoperatively. And the results were as follows; 1. The group I (Unipolar hip hemiarthroplasty without cement) had Harris hip score - average 79.4. The group II (Unipolar hip hemiarthroplasty with cement) had Harris hip score average 87.3. The group III (Bipolar hip hemiarthroplasty without cement) had Harris hip score average 80.5. The group IV (Bipolar hip hemiarthroplasty with cement) had Harris hip score average 86. 2. There were 2 cases of stem loosening (13%) among 15 cases in unipolar hip hemiarthroplasty and 1 case (6%) among 17 cases in bipolar hip hemiarthroplasty. 3. The movement of two components in bipolar hip hemiarthroplasty was noted in all cases and the movement of the outer bearing joint was more active than that of the inner. And the movement of the two components was not correlated with the use of cement. But Harris hip score was superior cement stem group to noncement stem group. 4. Unipolar hip hemiarthroplasty showed the similar clinical and radiological results with bipolar hip hemiarthroplasty of femoral neck fracture in the elderly. As a result, unipolar and bipolar hip hemiarthroplasty were considered the proper treatment method of the femoral neck fracture in the elderly.
